Re: Anybody drive an old Chrysler

+1 ^^^

By '03 the bugs were worked out. In 05 ford switched from the ford z-tech motor to the Mazde Duratech. A big improvement. I'd put 05 to present Focus' up there with anyone for reliability. Interior fit and finish didn't really improve until the redesign in '08. I think these are out of your price range but a little info never hurt anything.

P.S. My '07 gets 31.5 MPG mixed driving consistently, and as high as 36 mpg on long trips if you keep the speed down.

Beware the 2001 Focus! Lots of gremlins reside therein.

Thanks for the tip. The one available was an 01, too. I see today it's sold anyway. Boy, those mileage makers are going fast!

I do want to say, I posted this question on the three most populated forums I frequent, and this one has yielded by far the greatest response.

What a great community!

If you aren't afraid of the mileage, this one looks pretty decent http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.j...e=b&num_records=25&cardist=235&standard=false

Your best bet for a cheap car is probably going to be a private seller. Anything halfway decent the dealers are going to have priced pretty high. But since those same dealers aren't going to give people decent trade-ins on them so they may be more inclined to try to sell them themselves. That being said, my sister just sold her '04 Corolla with well over 100k on it for something like $5 or 6k which I couldn't believe. Reliable fuel-thrifty cars sure hold their value. A couple years ago I wanted to buy a used car. Just something decent to drive to work. I THOUGHT that $5k would get you a pretty nice car. I was wrong. Best thing I found was a newer Buick Century with 90k miles and when I went to look at it it had hail damage all over it..

I wouldn't overlook Saturns. Yes their interiors will probably be in not great shape and they will use oil, but if you keep oil in them, they are fairly tough to kill and get good mileage.
