I am looking at ways to upgrade my Dish satellite system, after talking to dish yesterday, I was ready to launch bombs! I would like to have HD in both of the rooms I have TV's in, so I figured, I would upgrade to their new hopper system! Well, they want to charge me a cancellation fee($120) because my contract is not up yet, a $50 upgrade fee and a $95 installer fee! Then I would have to sign up for another 24 month commitment!

So I got to looking around, I have a dual LNB dish hanging on the house, and found out I can add another receiver, has anyone done this, and if so, how complicated was it?

Thanks.

You have to first determine if the LNB dish you have is capable of doing HD. Older dishes may not pick up all the satellites.

I cancelled Dish a long time ago and went with DirecTV.

You will have to use there product's. The signal's are scrambled and decoded by there own equipment. Any aftermaket product that decoded there signal would be considered pirated...

I don't think that is what he had in mind. I believe he wanted to get another Dish Receiver and add it to a separate antenna.

The Dish hopper is the equivalent of DirecTV Whole Home.

It works real well and it is cheap enough, if you pop for the small premium on initial install. We have 3 TV's. all stations are HD capable even if all the TV's are not, plus you can record and play back from any and all of the stations. Plus the Hopper has a humongous hard drive and can record 3 things simultaneously while you are watching another program. Pretty Sweet. Plus if you watch much Prime Time TV the Hopper can automatically record the whole prime time, every night, so when you start watching it ( just 5 or ten minutes after it has started) you watch it from the recording and can easily zip out all ads as you go. No wonder they call it the 'Hopper" 'cause they have the network stations 'hopping' mad at this feature.

Just so you don't think Dish is the only bad guy, I have a friend who went with Direct TV. He could have had 3 stations on the initial install. He only took two. A month later he decided he needed another one. Guess what? $200+ to add what he could have had the month before, for free.

I am simply asking if anyone had added another receiver to their system, I am currently using DISH equipment, I am not trying to pirate anything and the dish I currently have is a HD dish.

Opps never meant it was intentional sorry about that. Why not just split the lead going into the current reciever and take it down line i know the answer. I to have 3 tv's signed up for it..i also have two dvr's only one works to its full capacity the other is dumbed down to a reciever...im not paying for dual's but i have them.

Now back in the day i might have just tapped into the vhf output...amplified and broadcasted a bit...but alas i no longer have such ambition....Dont need homeland security knocking on the door either.

Can't do that. There is a control signal sent by the receiver to control the LNB.

Totally depends on what dish you have and what LNBs you have on what you can do. Older LNBs had multiple outputs and others have one that then get sent to a multi switch and then get sent ut to various receivers.

At least with DirectTV, once you add a receiver, you automatically renew the 2 year commitment so you may have no choice as I am sure Dish does the same thing.

My suggestion is tell Dish you are switching to DirecTV and see what they will do for you regarding the extra money. May not have any choice with the contract.

FWIW, Directv will buy you out of your dish contract.

I added two additional receivers to my dish a couple years ago, when we went to 3 tv's. no problems.

When the ex-wife and her niece left, I went back to only one tv on the satellite.

I have looked at both the genie as well as the hopper.

I do not know if this would be an option for you, but there could be lots of used lnbs/dishes and recievers at the local cable vision company, as they at one time would do a buy back if you swapped back to thier system.
And since you live outside of thier area, they might just give them away, worth a try.

I have a dish with a dual LNB from which I run two coax down feeds to two receivers.
Each one is independent.
Is that what you meant?

Tim,

Exactly what I meant, which Dish version do you have, I have a dish 500 dual LNB hanging on the house, with a single receiver hooked up right now, what I want to do, is install a second receiver, so I have HD on both TV's. Right now I have an HD feed to my main TV and a SD feed to my second TV, I was HD on both TV's.

Re: ANybody here added a 2nd receiver...

I can lease another receiver from them for 7 bucks a month, but they will not ship it to me, they said they have to have a tech install it, which will cost $95, which I am not going to pay, I can buy these solo receivers for less than $100! Right now I have a Vip722 receiver, which is a duo receiver, that delivers HD to one TV and SD to the second TV. From my understanding, the receiver downgrades the second signal to SD for delivery to the 2nd TV, which, in my opinion is really stupid!

After talking to them again today, I almost temped to reactivate my large KU dish!

Directv does the same thing. The way to get around that with DirecTV is to buy it new from a reseller, install it yourself and then activate it.

For example, you can buy the following receiver:
Dish Network Duo VIP 222K TV Receiver Brand New in Box 0753960010588 | eBay

install it and then call Dish to activate it.

I would call the guy that has this auction and tell him what you want to do. He may have the best suggestions.

I have DirecTv and I had them install my first 2 receivers. I bought the rest brand new on ebay and added the to my account. If I ordered them straight from Directv, they wanted the installer to come out like Dish wants to do with you.

Re: ANybody here added a 2nd receiver...

I am probably going to buy a Vip211k receiver and install the damn thing myself, when I was stationed in Hawaii, I actually did sat installations as well as home surround sound and stereo installations for a side job, so I know how to install the stuff with no problems, I still have all my tools, including dish pointing equipment, but they won't let me install this crap, they want to get their blood money!
