Anybody Know? (update)

Will a lower unit off a 1975, 75hp Rude fit a 1982, 70hp if I change the shift rod??? Just trying to save a bunch of time.....that time of year.

hi obj back around the era 74-76 omc changed the shifting of the gearcases down was forward up for reverse check to see which one you have later models are up for forward.<br />there was also a change to the drive shaft not sure but i think there is about a 3/4 inch difference

The 75 hp 20" should work. They both (1975 & 1982) shift the same direction. The driveshaft should be a 4 spline shaft.

Right Mr. D. The 73 & 74 shifted backwards. The shaft is a four spline. The main question is the shift rod. From the 82', it takes a squirelly bend...offset and back a little. The 75' is just offset and trying to set the shift rod height on the 75' with the gage to 82' specs don't make it....comes up an inch short with no more adjustment. Maybe I'll just play around with it, change out the shift rod and see what happens.<br /><br />We'll let ya'll know what happens....thanks for all the input folks.

What I did was take the shfit rod from the 82' 70hp and put it in the 75' 75hp and set the height to specs for the 82'. Plugged it in and it worked. The 75' shift rod was a little shorter and not bent the same way as the 82'. So far no problems.....that's been near month and a half ago.
