Good point Old Carver, the poly lay-ups would last even longer if they where done properly. In my 22 year old boat (I won't mention the name, but it starts with a "B" and ends with an "AYLINER") I found edges of plywood that were never touched by resin (good ole' mass production). The wood that was sealed properly still looked like brand new lumber. I don't think that people should have any worries about using regular poly as long as you take the time to cover every molecule of wood with glass and resin.

Is there a great way to make sure that the wood is fully covered with resin and glass?

The pic was taken to show where I messed up my recently sprayed metalflake-gelcoat with my shirt.

But in the background, there is a floor grate covering the bilge area. Made of welded plastic sections of HDPE bread crates.

A work in progress

The only problem with your floor grate to the bilge, is if you get a hole in the hull...you'll sink very quick like a rock thrown into the ocean...LOL! If you seal off that grating, you'll create an airlock that will prevent you from sinking....so quickly...LOL!
