i'm looking to replace my 14' flat bottom fiberglass skiff with something lighter and more suited to my 10hp motor. this looks like it will fit the bill nicely.

if anyone has built one, i have a few questions about it.
first, what kind of performance can i expect with a 10hp motor?
also, how does it handle rough water? (like a whitecapped lake) i'm more concerned with a dry ride than with the bumps.
also, realistically how much space do i need to build one?
lastly, what type of trailer suits this boat? i have a trailer with bunks in the rear and rollers in the front... i could mod it if needed for full bunk support.

thanks

matt

matt,
I did not build form Glen L and have looked at other sites like armstrong, devlin and duckboats.net list a few other sites in there specs area but I can answer your how much room question I built a 16' alumnum boat last summer in my garage some times i needed both parking spots others I just needed one side.
devlin has a design called the honker and the snowgosse both seem to be ery popular with the open water guys

On the Glen-L website, you will find a section called the project registry. Send some emails to the Powerskiff builders.

I have built the Console skiff. I built my boat on one side of a two-car garage without any problem.

The hull of the Console skiff has the same shape as the power skiff, but a little larger. It should give you a ride similar to any semi-v hull hull that size. You may want to add a spray rail, but you can determine that once it is complete and you have used it a bit. Several variables can affect a dry ride.

For the trailer, bunks in the rear and keel rollers in front is fine.

Re: anyone built a glen-l power skiff 14' ?

I met a person today that I know has been building a 14' power skiff. He launched it today. He did a beautiful job and the boat performed well. He was running it with a new Yamaha 2 cycle 15 hp engine. It seemed to move the boat easily with a couple of adults in the boat. My guess is that he was getting a little over 20 mph at wot. There was no wind today, but the boat handle the other boat wakes without any problem. Similar to my boat, he does get some water shooting up the side near the aft 4 feet of the chine. Similar to me, he plans to fabricate a simple spray rail. The water doesn't get into the boat, but it is annoying and probably not the most efficient. If you would like, send me a private message with your email and I can pass it along to him.

thanks guys. i really want to build one of these, but i have to find the space (and the time!) first. unfortunately i don't have a garage to work in. congrats to those who have built their own boats. i'm sure there's no feeling quite like launching for the first time... or getting it out past the no-wake zone for the first time!

matt
