Re: anyone else get a sore shoulder from shooting big guns?

A 12 gauge is about 1200 FPS with a 438 grain(1oz) slug, 1400 ft lbs Kinetic energy
50. cal black powder 1900 FPS with a 370 grain ball, 3126 ft lbs Kinetic energy
50. (M82A1) is typically around 3200 fps with a 660 grain bullet, 15,004 ft lbs Kinetic energy

Just using google for common bullet weights and velocities and http://www.firearmexpertwitness.com/customguns/calcnrg.html kinetic energy converter for your viewing pleasure......yeah I am saving for a Barrett! Don't tell the wife, trying to keep it a secret!!

Its important to note that the Barrett has multiple forms of recoil damping where as the shotgun normally only has a pad and the black powder rifle is another form of sadomasochism and has no form of recoil damping in most rifles and most tend to compare the kick of a Barrett M82A1 to a 12 gauge on buckshot. I do however question the accuracy of the kinetic energy calculator as it seems off on the Barrett but its late and I am not getting my brain working anymore today!

Ever took a 10 ga to a turkey shoot? After three rounds, and the post turned to toothpicks, they wouldn't let us compete anymore :D

Ayuh,... Something I've noticed with other folks shootin',...
They don't hold the gun Tight into their shoulder...
Held Tight, it's just the normal recoil felt...
Held loosely, the gun gets a runnin' start before it gets to your shoulder, which causes the black, 'n bluing, 'n Pain...

Hold it Snug against the shoulder, 'n put a recoil pad on the buttstock....;)

I get a little tired towards the end of a 200 round trap shoot :D

I enjoy the muzzle brakes on my 7Mag and 270. Really takes the sting out.

See where most of you are coming from now, most of you target shoot and some compete. A very good friend of mine target shoots most of the year. He says that he gets black and blue once in a while. I'm not much of a target shooter, I do not even like zeroing in my riffle or slug gun, only do it to make sure the guns are dead on, I'm a meat hunter. Another very good friend of mine was voted into the skeet shooters hall of fame this past year. He was telling me that sometimes at the end of the day of shooting, he had a hard time lifting his arm.

Enjoy your sport. :)

The remington copper slug makes a hole like a subway tunnel, and has the ballistics of a snowball. I killed 3 nice deer with heart shots at over 100 yards with Hornady 12g sabot slugs, with a much higher velocity. Tracking was harder, though.

The trick to accurate shooting of a big bang gun that is going to cause some pain is to slowly squeeze the trigger so the actual discharge is as much a surprise to you as it is to the game in sight. Proper shouldering, pads, etc limit the self inflicted damage, but the pain ain't no big thing in the heat of the hunt.

Well I shoot a 45-70 from contender equipped with a 16 1/2" barrel and a muzzle brake. I have a shoulder stock on it and it is the fastest lightest weapon I carry. Hand loads with 405 grain bullets (which is just shy of an ounce) are pure torture to shoot all day.......

It is the LOUDEST hardest kicking monster but what a great brush gun!

Shooting it as a pistol w/o the shoulder stock is kin to hitting your hand and wrist with a ball peen hammer all day.

As loud as it is and as hard as it kicks........ I do not hear it or feel it when I shoot at a deer.

Re: anyone else get a sore shoulder from shooting big guns?

i shot at a deer this morning.
he came within 20 ft of my stand!
i hit him in the lower shoulder.
I was about 3 inches too low from dropping him in his tracks.
the paralax on the scope got me.

i was just in the zone, and before i knew it i had shot aiming at the center mass of the deer.
I should have aimed higher since he was so close.
but he might be dead somewhere.
there was decent blood.

i will track him more later.
but white hair where i shot him means gut shot.

I used to shoot 60-120 rds each weekend w/ my 1918 303 Enfield, not a bad kick as the rifle weighs 11 lbs!! Accurate as hell too.
Now my Winchester pump 12 ga with 3" Magnums was NOT fun after 20 rds, Ive never shot slugs, are they a hotter powder??
Another kicker of mine is the rebarreled Mauser(was 8 mm, Israelis swapped it to 7.62) carbine, yowch, light weight, similar to my Mosin 7.62x54R , very accurate as well.
The one I shoot all day is my SKS 7.62x39, perfect match of carbine with accuracy.

They kick about like a magnum shot load. Rifled barrel is actually lighter than an old smooth bore. When you shoot a big old rifled slug through a choked smooth barrel, it'll go, but it kicks like a mule.

Well, yes, but you'll get a lot more satisfactory relief with a high quality recoil pad.

With slugs? oh my god yes I get sore! I wish my 7mm Mag wasn't so much fun to shoot it makes me sore as well, my buddy has a 45-70 that like to kill me! I'm building a 22-250 tack driver cause I'm old and a wimp!!

Hey Lipp I was thinking about getting a 7mm, one thing I was wonderig is what is the recoil difference between it and a 30-06? any thoughts?

If I'm reading the chart correctly, maybe a 7mm-08 would have alot less recoil than a 30-06. Don't know if anyone has any experience with that round..... Appears to have the same muzzle velocity as an 06.

Re: anyone else get a sore shoulder from shooting big guns?

Sure a 7mm-08 will have less recoil than a .30-06.....It is a short actioned round based on the .308 cartridge....Basically a .308 case necked down and a 7mm bullet stuck in it.

The 7mm-08 is very accurate and as noted has light recoil. It is a great choice in Remingtion's Model 7 for a short, lightweight deer rifle.

Are there other quality options besides Remington with that round? I guess I haven't really Googled it yet...
