Anyone familiar with transom mounted spontons

Hello fellow boaters, I just got me a 14ft Alumacraft jon boat with a Mercury 2.5hp and Im thinking about welding spontons to the transom, anyone has any coments?, good or bad idea?, pros and cons?, will this make my jon boat more stable?

If the boat is small and narrow, you might get some extra bouyancy that would make the boat squat from your weight a bit less. You certainly don't need them in regard to the weight of the motor.

I usually see them on bigger tinnies that have very heavy outboards on them. A heavy 4-stroke or E-Tech can sometimes cause the stern of a boat to squat a bit and the extensions can help with that.

ok, so other than allowing me to install a biger outboard, they don't really benefit my boat.
would you add them to your jon boat if you had one?

I don't see you would be gaining anything. I have a 1442 Alumacraft and considered putting them on mine, BUT a have a 9.9 Honda which planes the boat out and the extra lift from the "spontons" would help it to plane out faster and more level, with one person in the back. If your motor isn't big enough to plane the boat, it wouldn't be of much value.

I think they can be Ok if you have a problem with bouyancy in the rear of the boat. This can occur with an engine that is heavy, relative to the size of the boat, or when you have a small boat with a tiller steer motor and you happen to be a large person.

As long as the boat doesn't "squat" do to any of these sorts of things, I would leave it alone.
