I'm working on an outdoor G scale layout and a multi-room O-scale layout addition. Need a little switching advice...

First, it's mandatory to post a picture of your layout.... :)

Used to have a Tri Ang HO set as a kid, and made paper Mache tunnels and a popsicle stick/tooth pick telegraph line.

That count?

Volphin - have you been to the Tennessee Central Museum here in Nashville? They have a pretty neat model going - and of course host several model railroading events.

My grandfather and great uncle both did N scale stuff. I've got some of their buildings and trains, but haven't really ever developed an interested besides nostalgia.

A picture will not cover it. It spans several rooms. I'll take a video tonight. :)

Yeah, I should have made it plural. Video? Cool..............

I have not been there, but now it's on my list. :) I'm in Nashville every two weeks or so for business, so I'll stop on by! Thanks for the link!

Re: Anyone here into Model Railroading?

That IS an awesome layout Tim... and very close to where I live! I'll visit that layout. Mine is nowhere as complex. Instead of modeling scenes around my layout, I incorporated it into my home. It started as a Christmas thing, and the family loved it so much, we decided that it would stay up all year. Usually I run a little trolley or a Berkshire freight train. During Christmas, it's the Polar Express (of course).

Upstairs I run a G Tweetsie RR, but it is a very small layout that will be used in the garden once I get my rail beds and track laid out.

I have a large American Flyer collection.... but no permanent layout.
My bucket list includes an outdoor layout at the cottage. There is a corner of the island that has a perfect mountain layout....at least, that's the plan.

They've got several real trains/cars they can tour depending on what's going on and who's there - so give 'em a call as you head in to see if you can get on board.

I've heard talk of a really cool excursion steam train outta' Chattanooga, but I haven't found it yet.

Ok, so here's my question: I want to upgrade my transformer. I have looked at the MTH 4000, and the Lionel ZW-L. As I understand it, a Lionel postwar ZW 275 won't work my bell and whistle on my modern engines. Is there any other alternatives?

Yes to model railroading...from N scale up to O (Lionel tinplate, Ives, and '70 & up Lionel).

Sorry, can't help on the transformer part though. I went through a similar question on a model train forum when I asked about upgrading my Lionel transformer as its one of those with the two metal posts on top for the wiring connections and my son is 15 months old now so I don't think drool covered hands on those posts are a good combo!

I was kicking around the MRC offering for O scale but it won't suit your needs if you're spanning multiple rooms...

Actually I got out of it. I found myself buying too much stuff but not really working on my layout. So I sold off 70% of my stuff, tore down my layout and finished my basement into a family room. It was fun and I do miss it. I was in a train club that met regularly at each member's houses to play trains on their layouts. I had turned it into a great social thing as well. However, the layout just took up more physical and financial real estate compared to my level of interest. Here was my layout: Train Layout Photos by ezmobee | Photobucket

The best larger scale model train forum I was ever on was here: Forum Home | O Gauge Railroading On Line Forum They can definitely answer your transforer question.
