I think you had the right idea with the chain saw. Then she would think twice about asking you to do other projects....LOL :D

Basically, it just sat in a pocket.
Sounds to easy, whats the catch??? :)

Probably a good trim carpenter!:D

I have set dozens of those things and I always made sure to make a pocket before doing anything else.
I also glued, screwed (lag bolts) and nailed them in place.
Be aware of a strangulation hazard (small kids) if you use tapered spindles, keep them so close together that a 4" sphere will not pass through at any point.
Keep up the good work.

We had our new carpet installed upstairs the other day so I thought I would update this thread. The rehab of our upstairs is nearly complete from the previous owners abuse.

I refreshed the main bath with new toilet, painted vanity (it looks really good) a granite vanity top, and new faucet. The old doors that were scratched up have been replaced with more modern 6 panel doors (I still need to put up the casing). New carpet installed throughout the upstairs, and of course that brings us to the newel post.

I've never done a job like the newel post before but I must say that I think it came out pretty darn good.

For those who don't feel like scrolling up, here is the before...

And here is what it looks like now...

While I am at it you might notice the door in the second after pic has no door knob yet. After the install I "discovered" that the latch plate on the door (not strike plate on frame) was not mortised out:mad:

We are also putting a new closet system in the master closet. The kind with shoe racks and pull out hampers and what not. Pretty cool stuff. I pretty much will have no use for a dresser anymore.

Anyone have any pointers for using a chisel? I need to mortise out the latch plate and it will break my heart if I screw up the door?

Make sure the chisel is as sharp as possible. You should be able to shave wood with it without using a hammer- just hand pressure. Then go slowly. Don't try to remove too much wood in one pass.
