Have any of you seen the video games that are now being offered for sale (advertised) on T.V.....that glorify pillage, rape & plunder? I am horrified at this.....I'm sorry, but I don't think that the content should be displayed on public T.V.....It is the wrong message for that format....I will never spend 1 cent or (50) cent for that garbage.... I might be ranting.... My 12 year old son will never spend a nickel on that sh!T & I do find it offensive not only in a figurative sense....It is morally reprehensible to advertise it ..in any way, shape or form.....IMHO....JK

I agree some of that stuff shouldnt be marketed on TV......but I am not necesarrily offended by it. Most of those game titles are "M" for a reason. I assume you are referring to The Grand Theft Auto series???

To me its worse that the games are blamed for the violent behavior of the kids. The parents need to instil the morals in the kids so that they know that its just a "game" and understand doing those things for real is bad. I think you are doing the right thing JK, and its something most parents dont do.......know what your kids are playing, and dont just buy it for them because they cant and just turn away after that

Re: Anyone offended by the "New video" games?

Nope. I just finished stealing a car and using it to mow down people standing in the streets. Then when it blew up I got out and emptied my machine gun into all the other cars to make them blow up. Then I stole another car and drove into a lake before the cops could catch me. Relieves alot of stress. Maybe not for a 12 year old, but that's why they have game ratings. If an adult wants to play a game like that there's absolutely nothing wrong with it.

Are you aware that the percentage of people under 18 who commit violent acts is LOWER now than it has been in many decades? You just hear about it more often because there's more kids than there ever have been, and those kind of stories are what bring the good ratings on the news. Anybody who blames violence on video games is just a bad parent.

"Z" & "P" & "R"...Respectavely....."Z" it doesn't make you a bad person.....I think that you are an adult now...(I think)...I do not know your true age so .....If you are rated "M" ...So be it...& You cannot rationalize lower teen transgressions by merely stating it...Give us your data....I'm willing to let the pot smoking thing go....Although i don't think it is your best interest in the long run....Getting back on topic ....I don't think that T.V. is an appropriate forum for this kind of advertiesment...

When I was a kid & some of the other kids (my friends), & brothers were in the "Army"...I.E. Viet Nam......We didn't have the knowledge or toys to wage full war.....We had an empty beer can for a grenade & a stick for a gun....While "Boys will be boys"....You (and) they will not learn anything from these games....

Furtermore, I feel it is a moral imperative... That this sort of 'Glorification 'not be bourne out...Especially for you two "Lilly White" that have not left "Podunk" or Minnesota or Portland..You ain't as bad as you think you are..If you cannot see that the message to our children from this SHIITE is wrong...I weep for the future....Wait till you really got to pay the bills, have your own kids & have no time for these stupid games.....Rodbolt, you & your kids do not need to waste your time on that crap.. ;) ..Teach them what you know of engines & such ....It will take them much further.....JK :)

I just enjoy smashing all the cars.

If I can help it, he will never play the game till he is 18.

We dont watch enough TV to see these commercials.

Ken

I, too, am horrified by the games advertised on TV.

Intuitively, one thinks that they must "teach" terrible behavior. I wonder if ZmOz can tell us where he got the info about violence from sub-18s.

My generation was "influenced" by John Wayne and Roy Rogers movies and by stories of WWII. We read comics about Superman and Batman and Captain Marvel (SHAZAM!!). We crawled around in the woods "killing" Japs and Nazis and we shot the guns out of the hands of outlaws and ran them down when they headed for their hideouts. The closest we got to playing at bad behavior was being the "redskins" when we played cowboys and indians. Even then, the redskins sometimes won. I was a big fan of Crazy Horse because I had read the Lakota version of his life and battles.

That was very different. Did it make us a better generation of men? I frankly don't know, but I doubt it.

What did you play at when you were young, and how do you think it influenced who you are?

Barbies and yes. :D

Actually, I played with my brother's GI Joes when he wasn't lookin too. GI Joe and Barbie had lots of fun.

We were too busy playing in the woods and making tree forts and fishin to even watch TV until after dinner, then the TV was set on whatever channel my Dad wanted beginning with "Combat" followed by whatever else he watched like Laugh-in and Ed Sullivan.

We also played a lot of cards like Canasta, Pinochle, and Pitch.

Other than that we played outside, summer and winter didn't matter. Snow forts in the winter, tree forts in the summer. We all skiied, tobogganed, went snow shoing with Grandpa and the dogs, and ice fished in the winter. The summers were filled with playin in the lake and woods, camping, riding bikes and car picnics. My parents also loved to hike so we did a lot of that.

I play HALO 2 on-line and play constantly against "kids". The game is MA rated...i.e. 17 and older. I can tell you that these kids are no where near 17.

It's a parental issue Medoc. Sounds like your house is in control.

Re: Anyone offended by the "New video" games?

The big difference between the games when I was a kid and the games of today, is none of the old games were in realistic situations with realistic effects. I played games like "Defender", "Pac Man", "Space Invaders". I'm amazed that they are allowed to show realistic stuff on tv when it's clearly marketed towards kids. It is rated M for mature, but video games are such a strong focus among kids interests, the rated m thing doesn't matter much. Kids will find a way to play it.

Capitalism is a great thing. However, these companies that make the games need to have some morals... and I think there should be more control on marketing, since they dont' seem to have those morals. It's all about the dollar. When you can see a commercial at halftime that shows a "special ops" agent sneak up behind some guy, grabbing him and slashing his throat, that's just not right...

One more thought. Unless, there are rules, I don't know how I can expect a company to have morals and succeed in the video game business today?? Like I said, the dollar basically rules here.

Yeah usually that would fall into the hands of the parents that show no responsibility towards what their kids do or play etc. It is those same parents that blame the games and not themselves when a kid beats someone with a bat because they saw it in a game. Yeah I suppose there is still the risk of older siblings or older friends buying the games for them, but even then its still the parents that need to know what kinds of things the kids are playing.

I grew up on Mario, Duckhunt, and Kung Fu for NES................from these I learned that there are coins in sewer pipes, I can throw fire, and the simple leg kicks will beat guys with knives.

Like I said before the games themselves dont necessarily offend me, because I do play some of them. I do however feel that the marketing of these games should be regulated better. In the end its up to the parents. As said, JK you should be commended. you too KIZ

Offended? Half the people are offended by half of the things that go on in the world and do half as much to change them. The media is only half the problem. Did I offend anyone? ;)

Re: Anyone offended by the "New video" games?

Other than Halo and Halo 2 and those Tom Clancy games, I don't care much for the FPS games, not that I have played them all or anything. I don't play games very much anyway, but the GTA games don't interest me at all. When I was a bug killer, I found it interesting how many tweens had these hardcore cop killer games in their rooms, clearly purchased by their parents.

I don't feel that the games themselves cause juvenile violence anymore than rock & roll does, but I do concede that they give ideas to already unstable kids that would probably have become violent anyway. There have been violent nasty kids as long as mankind has existed, we just see it more now due to the increased presence of the media. What used to be headline news in a newspaper that not everybody read is now home camcorder shots on the evening news for everybody to see.
