I'm with rodbolt...

Put me in front of an old arcade game like pacman, galaxian, centepede, dig-dug, or a good ol' pinball machine, I'm a happy guy!...

JB asked.
What did you play at when you were young, and how do you think it influenced who you are?
Well.. I "killed" alot of bad guys.. :D Rode bikes untill the tires fell off.. :D Built forts.. :D went fishing.. :D Played baseball, basketball, and football games on the playground after school (this was when kids could play on the school playground, after school.. now they lock up everything) :(

funny, watch after hours tv. After a couple of hours of comedy central and their language, the 1 900 call us now commercials and of course the 1/2 hour girls gone wild infomercials, the video game commercials dont seem so bad anymore.

Four things:

1) My kids play a lot of video games. They especially like the fantasy games and FPS. I draw the line at GTA, which glorifies killing good guys. We talk about character and good vs. evil a lot. Those are my chosen focus areas with my kids.

2) My kids play a lot outdoors and in organized sports.

3) I think the balance between TV, games and outdoors is very similar to when I was a kid. I don't belive that their lives are substantially different than ours/mine (I am 46)

4) Kids today do way more homework, which I hate. I don't recall really doing any homework in elementary school other than in 5th grade which I spent in Texas.

It's not the game that disheartens me. It is the market that supports them. lately, it's elite to be a mobsta, kill people and jack their cars...."Oh, it's alright. It's just a video game".

Aside from the morality of the game themes, my generation and my children's generation (they are between 40 and 50) were much more physically active than todays children.

Any indoor activities were to fill time when we couldn't be outdoors running, riding bikes, climbing trees, fishing, hunting, swimming and other calorie burning activities.

Kids we called fat would be slightly overweight today and kids who were truly obese were around 2% of the population. Many more of us were downright skinny. I had to gorge on bananas to make minimum weight to join the Navy. I was 5'9" and weighed 120lb.

Of course, we didn't have TV or computers to capture us into inactivity. I have to laugh at people who spend hours "working out" to try to make up for what daily life provided just 60 years ago.

http://gr.bolt.com/oldsite/articles/violence/violence.htm

You'll find the same information on the FBI's official website if you look hard enough. Your generation is actually more violent than mine, JB... ;)

If anything, these violent games are helping to reduce violent crimes, since people like me can take out their aggression on pretend people, instead of going on a homicidal rampage at the DMV like I've often dreamed about... :p

I believe that as long as the parent has some influence on which games are being played, it is okay.
I'm an adult(but a kid locked inside) and I play video games almost everyday.
I like war games, racing games, and especially golf.
There are a couple games that should NOT be out. I can name one...the playboy game and there is another similiar to nude poker. Anything related to male/females undressing should NOT be allowed for sale.
Other than that, I believe that the parent should regulate what their children watch and play and that includes television and the internet.

That's my 0.02 cents.

They aren't allowed for sale to children. It's perfectly alright for an adult to buy one if they choose to, it's no different than a playboy magazine. Children certainly shouldn't be playing these games, but that's no reason for them to be illegal for adults.

I agree with 12Footer's perspective.

I don't think violent video games are making a more violent society, but rather the other way around.

It's "cool" to be gansta, kill cops, and demean women through prostitution and/or rape. The games aren't creating these attitudes, it is these attitudes that are creating the games.

A lot of todays youths have nothing to do, they are board so they go and hang out in places that get them in trouble. Lots have stopped going to school, at least during the day, that is why they lock things up now. I work with teens being locked up and they do not care, they say live hard and die young. We lock them up for 6 to 12 months and when they turn 18 they just go and play with bubba. We need to start at home if you want to change our kids. Todays games are just money makers, that is the name of the game$$$$$$$

And these games do play on weak minds.

Re: Anyone offended by the "New video" games?

I've been doing more thinking about this subject, and remembering back to my formative years. Video games consisted of Pong and then Atari at home, and Pac-Man and Donkey Kong at the arcade. I didn't play the games much, as my family didn't have the money to allow me to spend extensive amounts of hours playing games (but I did a lot of watching, I'll admit). For the most part, I played with my buddies. War games, running around, that sort of thing.

I also remember that, despite the lack of negative video game influence, there was still crime. There was still rape. I saw first hand the kids who were violent, who beat the snot out of other kids for no real reason other than they felt like it. I saw the kids who tortured animals and then later probably became hardened criminals or killers.

The constant that existed then exists now: Poor parenting. The parents were/are either lazy, or just not in the childs life because they have to work two jobs and a babysitter is raising their kids. It isn't the new games that are creating the problems, it is the bad environment the kids are raised in. If a parent raises their child properly, the child will have the perspective that allows him/her to understand that they are playing a game. If the child is surrounded by bad conditions, lack of care, criminal activity, it is hard for the child to tell the difference.

Obviously there will always be a percentage of kids, regardless of background, who might be negatively inspired by the games, but that percentage will be small compared to the percentage of rotten kids who would have been bad even if the games didn't exist.

I see this as being no different that the good ol' days when Rock n Roll was supposedly warping our kids minds. It's just people blaming their failings in child rearing on everything but themselves.

Todays games are not creating criminals, they are just creating fat kids, which is the truely real crime if you think about it.
