or has she crossed anyone's path yet?

Looks like she's going to be a strong one. Looks like she wll be east of the FL coast as a Cat 3, possibly a direct hit for the Carolinas, and we will see her in MA around Sunday as a Cat 2 (up to 100 MPH winds).

Good Luck to all in her way... Batten down the hatches!!

Sorry for the small attachment, here's the link it is from:

Re: Anyone preparing for Irene?

Yep. I started working for the Chesapeake Bay Bridge tunnel a month ago. I will be spending the weekend out on one of the islands at the ends of the tunnels. (wife is not too happy about that)

I live on the bay and am trying to get home ready now. At work we have a 48 and 24hr plan that has been started. If I can just get rid of the snake I can put the boat in the garage:)

Never ever prepared for a hurricane in 65 years. Have always had whatever I needed to sustain storms. You can learn from watching a squirrel. Plenty of can foods, always have 5 20 lb. propane bottles on hand for the gas grill.

Most people native to where I live will be driving along the shore watching the 20- 30 foot waves crash along the rocky shore line. We hardly ever lose electrical power for more then a day or two. Floods are not common here. I can not speak for the rest of the state.

Re: Anyone preparing for Irene?

I started to on sunday a little bit and some on monday till I started seeing the updated paths.

I'm pretty sure at this point down here in charleston all we'll see is 30-50mph winds which doesnt bother me at all. hell, it'll keep me outside working on stuff since I'll have such a nice breeze that the mosquitos wont be able to get me haha

Lots of ice, refrigerator is good for a while if you keep the door closed. Once you open it once take the food out and put in coolers, plenty of gas for the grill, candles, charged cell phones, leave one turned off. Make sure you know where your car charger is. The cell towers do have generators and will be one of the first things brought back in service. Lots and lots of water. Fill the bath tubs. (think about flushing the toilet)Fill the car up with gas now. Don't wait to stand in line Sat. Get cash, probably ATMs will be down. Stores down here stayed up as long as they could in the last one but could not take credit cards at some point as their network went down. Stores will have empty shelves at some point. Just think of it as camping for three days. But that's only for the people that get hit hard. Cat 1 and not right in the eye wall it just a big storm. Sure you need to pay attention but don't let the tv scare you. If you directly in the path really please prepare, it not a joke. Andrew took out an Airforce base. My relatives took a direct hit with Hugo and didn't have power for 3 weeks. We were out for three days in a small one. There are nasty bands that will pass through a hundred miles away from the center, but once it does make landfall if will loose strength quickly. The last Cat 1 we sat on the back porch and watched. I am 52 born and raised in the Sunshine State, been through a few.

If you have a generator and hook it up to the power panel please make sure to pull the meter or shut off the main. No reason to hurt a lineman by accident. Power is brought back on line according to priority and population density. If you live in the woods expect to be out longer.

Keep our 33' sailboat on a mooring in the raritan bay, had intended on just removing all canvas and sails but decided today to get it hauled talked to 5 marinas all local and one had a spot. its nuts getting it hauled tomorrow morning. problem with being in a mooring field of 200 boats is the other guy plenty of boats have been taken out by other boats breaking free.

Re: Anyone preparing for Irene?

Just called my marina since this is my first year there, Whites Marina on the Hudson river, and asked for advice. They said all the bigger boats are coming out and high tide/4 foot surges could possibly over extend the docks. I asked if it had ever happened before and was told this is the worst storm we could see in 50 years, they didn't know. I'm gonna go hang out tonight and talk with others there, pretty much do the wait and see thing. Who am I kidding, I'll probably pull the boat out!

Will be nothing more then a Nor' Easter by the time it reaches here, 50-60 mph, maybe less. Ocean is flat clam today.

Watch out for stores price gouging.

Looks that way. Went by the market yesterday, pure madness. We still gonna get hit with some serious rain. They're talking 5-10"?

Forecast at 8:00 AM predicting 1=2 inches of rain here and 2-4 inland.

Went to Market Basket Friday and they were selling Hurricane water 2gals. for a dollar, very reasonable.

Have a gen set to plug into house system have a writen instructions to run, maybeonce a year, turn off main, flip off water heater, flip main in garage, flip off gen circuit, start gen, warm up, flip gen breaker on, flip on garage, full power to house for what is needed. Have a 5,500 watt gen to run furnce or a/c, sump pump, fridge, freezer, few lights and a tv. Can live almost a normal life but need to watch electric use, but mainly just no oven (gas cook top), no hot water heater, and no dryer. Have never maxed out have put an amp meter on it from time to time and never pulled over 50% load.
