I just bought a new fish finder to replace an old lowrance with a shoot thru hall transducer on my 96 Javelin.

I was wondering if anyone has had any luck removing an old epoxied in transducer from a fiberglass hull?

Ive read that heat helps, but with the fiberglass im worried about also softening up the glues in the fiberglass......I guess my other option is to just mount it next to the old one and leave that one in there.

Most just clip cable and leave there or you can try busting up with a pair of channel locks or pliers but do carefully. Why not mount on the transom you will get better readings.

I've moved them several times from boat to boat.

Since fiberglass is smooth they really don't stick down all that tight. I just take a big screwdriver to the side and tab between the trandsucer and the floor.

They usually pop right off with a few taps. I just sand the surface of the transducer smooth again and reglue in my next boat.

^^^ Yup, it should pop off pretty easy. I tapped mine with a hammer (on the bolt hole/mounting ear) and it popped off clean.

It is on a Javelin 409FS, and the transom has a step down from the transom, and then another smaller step down to the bottom of the boat. I could mount it to the transom, but I have a feeling it will not work very well once the boat starts moving any faster than trolling.....

I will have to try popping it off tonight and hopefully I will have some luck.

If you can't get it to pop off, just leave it amd mount the new one close to it. Transom mounting and getting good depth reading with high speed bass boats can be difficult.

Re: Anyone remove a "shoot thru hall" transducer??

Okay, so I went and swapped out my transom mount xducer for a shoot thru hull one .

After trying to remove the old one, and looking at humminbirds website, it appears that my old transducer is actually a flushmount thru hall type transducer. Its plastic and threaded. The bottom of my boat is flat, but where that goes there is a ring where there must have been a hold, but it has the same finish as the bottom.

So after tapping on it, and probably doing more bad than good I think I will leave it there, and maybe put some caulk around it.

It is rough fiberglass on the inside of my hull....do I need to sand it down smooth where this new one will go, or will the epoxy fill it in good enough?
