Re: Anyone watching the new season: Deadliest Catch

Commercial fishermen are some of the greediest of the greedy!

Really

That is a broad statement. I have a Federal commercial rod & reel fishing license, There are daily allowable quoter's of poundage per day. I am allowed 75 lbs. of cod over 22 inches long per day. That could be two bull fish or a dozen fish depending on size. Also I can catch as much haddock until the quoter is caught.

Recreational fishermen can go out every day and keep ten cod over 24 inches long per person per day. If three recreational fishermen go out on a weekend in the same boat that is thirty cod. If on a party boat with forty people and most catch their limit of cod that is a lot of fish.

Who is the greedy one? :)

There is discard in both fisheries, any under size fish needs to be thrown back. Most cod when thrown back will die, you bring them up from a deep depth and the bellies hang out of their mouth, they will not live. The recreational fisherman throws the under size fish oerboard sees it swim down and thinks that fish will live.

Todays commercial fishery in the United States is ruled by sustainable allowable quoter's once the quoter is met the fishery is closed.

It is a shame of the mortality kill rate on the striper. You have the craber in the south and the lobstermen in the north that want to discimate the striper population. They blame the striper for the decline in their fishery, not the thousand traps that each boat puts in the water.

1. I do not have a problem with rod and reel commercial fishermen!... it's the netters and longliners that I hate!!!

If all commercial fishermen would burn their nets and longlines, I'd give them a pat on the back and buy the next 5 rounds.

2. I'm pretty sure that the limits are different for the comms. and recs. because your DNR figures the recs. will only go out 1 or maybe 2 days a week, while the comms. will go out 5-7 days a week... kinda evens out that way eh?!

3. (a) If you'll bring the fish up slowly, they'll have time to adjust to the pressure change and will survive being released.

(b) you can also learn how to "fizz" a fish.

4. I understand about the crabbers and the labsta fishermen, we have the same thing down here... but it's with landlocked Stripers and Crappie.

People say "we used to take the Crappie out of here by the cooler fulls, now we can't even catch a limit... I think the Stripers are eating them all!!!"... uh, no... Stripers and Crappie don't even share the same water 95% of the time, it's the people hauling them out by the cooler fulls that have depleted the resource!!!

... btw, are you familiar with the collapse of the north atlantic Cod fishery?
