Anyone with experience with new Yamaha F6 (F4)?

Does anyone have any experience to share with the new model F6 (F4)? It is just weird that there no reviews on the net. Wondering how it compares to the old model and overall performance compared to other maker 6hp models. Thanks!

I bought one this past summer. It's a good engine I guess, but I don't like it. It's super heavy and doesn't push the boat (Grumman sport boat 15ft) very fast. WOT gets me about 7 mph with me, 12 yr old boy, and a dog. It does idle reaaaal low though. 2.5 mph It's also very quiet, and it starts super easy. I like that you can switch from internal to external tank, and I think it's pretty fuel efficient. Just joy riding on the lake I don't use an external tank. It will run more than hours in half of the internal tank.

This my first Yamaha, and my first 4 stroke, so I can't compare it to a previous model.

The 4hp. Although, I've since been told that 4 and 6 are the same exact engine. I wonder what it would take to open the 4 up to make 6 hp.

By the way, how are you planning to use the engine?

Too much. Carb (or jets) and coil. Sell the 4 and get a 6. Only about $150 diff and almost $300 for the parts to move up.

I was going to sell my 6hp Merc and get the Yam. 6 pushes my 10' dinghy about 18 so maybe not or another Merc. Thanks!

Not sure why you would sell one 6hp to buy another 6hp unless the first was damaged beyond economical repair AND you were satisfied with the performance. If you are going to buy new, and you're looking at a Merc, you might as well buy the Tohatsu; Tohatsu makes the Merc engines, and they're cheaper. No need for brand loyalty who it is all made overseas anyway. Those little one cylinder engines don't have the same torque that the two cylinder two strike engines had.

I agree with you completely, but my merc 6 sits on a transom mount and is starting to get some weathering. It is now at a place where it's resale value is about optimum. In a couple of years it will not be looking so good. The Tohatsu is the best deal but there are no dealers in the keys. Hard enough to get the Merc dealers to do warranty work, much less Tohatsu. I still can't believe there is so little input on the little Yamy's on this great big web! Weird!

If I got rid of my stuff when it was at it's optimal resale value, I would never get to buy it.


What's wrong with a motor that "will not be looking so good," if it functions well for another 25 years?

Maybe cover it to protect it from the elements. ?

I see you don't live in coastal Florida where covering something does not help in the least. The salt is in the air. Every time the dew point hits the salt settles out of the air. Our cars rust from the inside out. I just replaced a running refrigerator in my air conditioned condo because the door rusted out in six years. We also have a 12 month boating season so we put a lot more hours per year on our equipment than many. We have no idea what winterization means!

LOL. I grew up in Tampa, so I know what you mean. Moved to Alaska and am still learning a lot. Still store my o/b in a heated garage for fear of it freezing. Miss the year-long boating but enjoy the winters.

There is a Tohatsu dealer in Big Pine Key and two in Tavernier.
