....required! Boy Scout troop annual crab trip in jeopardy!!! Running out of time to get a third of the fleet back on the water. A new lower unit is out of the question at this time. Two of the captains of the fleet are quite mechanical and could figure out much, time allowed. (I'm the third captain and the least mechanically saavy, but a real tortoise when time permits)

If we cannot find a new lower case by tomorrow, Plan B would hopefully work.

I have a very lonely, but fully functional, MR thrusted 1976 888, that is just sitting awaiting the day when I can give the whole package my undivided attention.

Will this MR drive bolt up to, and function with the 1986 Alpa 1 140 HP setup? I know the gear ratios are probably different (MR is 1.50:1) but we are just talking about 6 hours of use inside Tillamook Bay.

Your positive responses will be greatly appreciated by the next generation of our nations leaders.

The drive will work, the only thing you have to check is the shaft length of the shaft going into the coupler. Your 888 may be a different length from what you are replacing. If they are the same length, it's a direct swap. If not, just replace the splined shaft and that ujoint.

Ayuh,... What's the gear ratio/ motor on the broken boat,..??

You should be able to swap Just the Lower units, Not affecting the gear ratio at all...
edit;
Your 888 may be a different length from what you are replacing.

I thought Only the old in-line GM motors used the shorter input shafts,..??

I don't remember if the Fords were short or long. But measuring is a way of checking.
The gear ratio will be a joke. But it will make the boat move forward and reverse. Won't be doing any skiing or tubing with it. But it will transport at no wake speed, and overload the engine big time.

Ok, I know what to check. I don't want to swap just the lower unit if we can swap the whole drive.

What is the ratio on that 140 hp Alpha 1?
