Will a leak be apparent if I hook up and run the boat with a water hose? With motor not running and sitting in the lake it is taking on water. How best to identify where the leak is?

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,..... The Best way is to crawl down into the bilges at the dock, 'n find the leak,...

Use mirrors, or a camera, whatever it takes,.....

It may not leak on the muffs, No idea where it's leakin',....

The best way to fix your leak is to inspect your bellows. At that point you will probably find a rip in the rubber and now its on to your gimbal bearing as well. The water coming in enters through the gimbal bearing and the water takes out the grease along with bearing in the process.Depending on how long its been going on your universal joints may be shot as well.

Running on a hose and muffs will only isolateif it a hose or petcock.manifold, circulator pump.power steering cooler is leaking. That will be pretty obvious. If you don't find anything that way, then do as Bondo mentioned and get your head down low in the back of the bilge while it is floating. If you still cant find anything, look in the back of the motor with a flashlight in the dark.I found a very hard to detect leak using a flashlight and listening for water.Charlie

As new to any forum, I joined and posted a question April 23 regarding a leak. Soon after Conroe had major rain issues with two rooms in my home being flooded. Finally getting back to my boat problem I find I am ignorant as to how to operate in a forum. I have looked for procedures but can't any assists. I see references to "Adult Only" where I can get to basic posts and an unable to see any such place at the top of my screen to do so. How do I get help from this point or contact an individual? So sorry to be a slow learner. thanks, roy penn

If you click on the screen name, it bring up the private messaging screen. click, type and go.
Taking on water without the motor running could be:
main bellows leaking/cracked
shift cable bellow rotted/ broken
exaust pipe corroded away allowing water to leak in
transom housing has a hole corroded thru it
grommet where the trim/tilt wires enter missing/damaged/corroded
water inlet hose or clamp missing/broken/corroded 2 anode bolts on bottom of transom housing corroded/damaged
rotted transom, drive will move if you put your weight on it the cavitation plate
