Applying Gel Seal to Crankcase Halves. Any Tips?

Ok, I have the proper Permatex anaerobic sealer 51817 (small tube) or 51813 (large tube).

All old gel seal has been cleaned off of both surfaces. I have read that you can use a black light to check for residue. I haven't done that yet, but I will seeing as I already have the light.

Surfaces will be cleaned with acetone prior to application. Nitrile disposable glove to ensure no oil from fingerprints gets on the mating surfaces.

Sealer is applied in a continuous bead around the perimeter, around bolt holes and 1/4' away from the crankshaft sealing rings and bearings on one surface only.

I think I'm good up to that point, but I'm not sure how much sealer to apply. The manual doesn't go into much detail. How large of a bead should be applied? I'm not sure how much this squishes out when the two halves are torqued. I tend to use too much when I do these types of projects and in this case the consequences could be far worse than cleaning up the mess the excess makes.

Thanks for any replies.

Just a thin bead. As you said, it squeezes out.

Greg you want to apply a 1/8 inch bead and stay a t leasr a 1/4 away from edge and seal rings. I highly recommend you use the primer with sealant (in the manual). If you use the primer make sure you have everything ready to go as you have about 10 minutes before it sets up, if you use no primer wait at least 12 hours before starting engine. Sealer that was prepped with primer will be brittle when removed from a flange surface where non primered can be removed with acetone and razor blade fairly easy
