AQ 270 outdrive question..where does this go?

Thought I was paying attention...apparently not. There is a beveled washer that goes on one side of the fishline cutter. Which side? Toward the prop or the bearings? Which is the correct side for the beveled edge of this washer to face? I've looked in books & online schematics and it is not shown anywhere....
here's pics

I need to take the prop off mine, I will get to it today and let you know. Cannot remember which way that part goes offhand.

Thanks! I pulled mine off to keep it from seizing and to replace the anode & grease the splines. It was a 1983 junker I bought and have been going thru it to make a nice boat... runs great!

Re: AQ 270 outdrive question..where does this go?

I think it goes between the fishline cutter and the anode. The only thing that looks like a washer I saw on mine was in that position, but on mine it was further down the shaft, I could see it inside that ring that the anode sits on.
Does that make sense to you? It looks like it protects the bearings, etc. further down the shaft.

the nylon washer goes behind the line cutter. beveled side facing the transom.

I have a SP outdrive with the prop removed and have not seen that part. Therefore it must go behind the line cutter.

Have a great day,

Rob.

this picture shows that the spacer will fit (tightly) down in the bearing housing.

in that position the prop appears to be too far on the prop shaft as in this photo. The prop has too much axial play even with the prop nut tight it still slides on the shaft.

with the spacer between the fishline cutter & prop it looks like there is too much space between the hub & lower unit...but this way the prop is tight on the shaft and the fishline cutter is pressed between the bearing and prop.

So... I'm thorougly confused and afraid to run it without knowing it is assembled correctly.

On mine I think the spacer fits inside the bearing housing at least that is the only spacer or washer I have seen in the whole assembly. Maybe Rick will add to this thread since he knows these old drives really well!

as i stated earlier is the way it goes. washer first, line cutter then prop, then tab washer, then prop cone. if your setup doesn't have the tab washer (lock washer) then theres another nylon washer that goes on before the cone, but that setup has an allen head screw that holds the cone on.
I'll take pics of mine tonight if ya need.

Comparing pics to yours would be nice and comforting. If I put the beveled washer on with the beveled side toward the transom then the fishline cutter then prop, thin nylon washer, washer that locks to cone, cone, then allen head bolt...the prop has about 1/8" play that it can slide forward/back on the shaft even when cone is tightened. Just doesn't seem right to me. AFAIK there is no tab locking washer between prop & big thick washer with notches behind cone (item #35A, tab washer is #36 in this pic) mine has a nylon washer in place of the tab lock washer

Re: AQ 270 outdrive question..where does this go?

more pics.... if that is a stop machined on the prop shaft instead of an inner bearing race then I'm okay. This "washer" would be too tight to fit in the hole around the prop shaft. If it is between the prop & fishline cutter then the fishline cutter is almost touching the anode. If between fishline cutter & anode then the fishline cutter is about 1/4" away from anode.

Here's all the parts except the allen head bolt that came off with the prop.
