Since I have acquired this boat, and am going through to see what I have, and fixing as I go along going from one issue to the next, I have now come to my next one. I was told that when I bought the boat it was winterized, and since I have just found the missing weatherization plugs on the raw water cooling lines that were left out or open I am assuming I was told correctly. When I initially checked the engine it was over filled with oil, and now when checking the 270 out-drive, I find it overfilled, almost to the top. Is this normal on the 270 when you winterize the out-drive? I have, and only had outboards, so the I/O drive is a new beast to me.

Overfilled oil is not normal.
It is normal to do your oil changes as part of winterizing though, and then change spark plugs and maybe the impeller come spring.

Thanks Mullin, you have set me straight once again. Now to draining allot of fluid from the drive, but let me ask this, did I read the service manual correct, that it is supposed to be 10W-40 in the out-drive as well as the engine?
I had heard of overfilling an engine block by a quart or two when you were going to park it for a long period of time was good, but not sure. When I was in the Army, and when guys were getting deployed and storing there cars, it was common practice.

10W-40 is correct, they did have a bulletin out that also said you could use straight 30W.

Old wives tale. Not sure what good it could do, the excess oil MIGHT touch the bottom of the crankshaft if it's all the way down, but that is about all it would do. Then you have to drain it out before running it or it gets aerated and causes more problems.

Read the winterizing info up it the sticky at the top of the forum.
