Hello to all...
First off all i would like to say that i'm new to owing an in board out board boat.I joined this fourm seeking to find out and read as much info i can about the Volvo Penta AQ151..
I own a 1989 SunnRunner with a Volvo Penta AQ151 with a 290 Drive...
Ill give a quick overview of the boat,I got this boat May 2011 and it was in running order, when i got her home the first thing i did was look over the boat to get more fimiliar with it.I first changed the oil in the motor as it looked Due and so i knew it was fresh,i also chenged the oil in the leg as well. I then did the spark plugs, cap, rotor, points and condenser. And also put a new sea water cooling impeller.
She ran fine on her first sea trial,i took it out 3 more time and then i parked her for the rest of the season,i did not know about fogging the motor untill now so that never got done.
When i went out last weekend to get her all clean up i hooked up a fully charged battery and cranked away,it never started up,it just kept cranking..I then walked back to the motor to find out that the timing belt had snaped.
Now i have no idea what or why it snaped but thank god it did in my back yard..i looked at the pulleys and they were pretty rustey but i'm still not sure if it was the rust that broke it or the came or another pully was seized that did it.
Any how i cleaned up all the pullys and instelled a new belt, set the timing the way the manual said, thanks to DON S..your a savior with all your great post and knowledge..After all said and done i went to start it up and NOTHING.. i put my inline spark plus tester on and i have no spark. I'm now thinking that the coil is gone bad???? when i put my multimeter across the -&+ of the coil i get 7.82 volts.. i read some where on this site i should have 12volts not 7?? I also read some where to take the + lead off the coil and test for voltage, ill have to do that in the morning and see if it changes..Any help would be great..Thanks!!

That is not how you test voltage to the coil, you put the red meter wire on the + terminal of the coil, and the black lead on a good clean ground on the engine, not the - terminal. It is not a ground.

Points are probably bad as Bond-o mentioned. They get corroded when just sitting and don't make contact electrically. Put in a new set and a condenser and it will probably run fine. It's just part of an annual tuneup and getting ready for the season.

When you changed the belt, did you check the tensioner? It's a wide bearing and needs to turn smooth, no roughness in the bearing. If there is, it will damage the belt if it sticks.

Thanks for all the replys..
"bgc" my boat is a 195CV with a cuddy,
And to "Don s" ill go check the points and condenser and also mesure the voltage at the coils the proper way :)..
Oh and the the tensioner i checked it before putting the new belt on and it turn very smooth..

Thanks!!!

Thanks "bgc"..The boat is in not to bad of shape for its age i'm guessing...
So i changed the points and gapped them to .016 at TDC and also changed the condenser and still no start..I also hooked up my meter red wire to the + of the Resistor pack and the black wire of my meter to the battery groung and i got 8.8volts.. What is the way to test this Volvo Penta resistor for resistance, and what are ther number to tell if its good or bad?

Thanks!!!

Also if the resistor is bad,can i use one from a Auto motive parts store?..Is there a specific ohm it has to be??
Thanks!!

Ayuh,... That ain't the problem,.... 8.8v is 'bout right....

Did ya set the points on the high point of the dist. cam,..??
Dwell,..??
With the key, On,... Is there spark 'tween the points,..?? does the coil Fire when you fire the points,..??
Are the points properly Grounded,..??

Hi Bond-o.. Yes i made sure that the points were gapped with the high point od the dist. cam.

Also im not sure what yours asking me to check when you say "Is there spak between the points and does the coil Fire when you fire the points"??

What i will do is see if there is spark between the points when i turn the key to crank the motor over..

How do i check to see if the coil is firing??

Ayuh,.... With the key, On, 'n the dist. cap Off, move the points, open, 'n closed with yer screwdriver....
You'll see tiny sparks...
a spark tester, or ole spark plug, should Fire off the coil, for each time the points are moved, open, 'n closed...

Go look in the Adults Only section at the Top of the forum, I think you find a basic knowledge article in there that explains Point Ignition, 'n it's diagnostics.... ;)

Wow thanks for pointing me in the right direction..
I managed to create spark when opening and closing the points, and after putting everything back she fired right up...
So thanks to all with getting her back to life..
