AQ175A Cuts out when accelerating hard

I have a 1984 Cranchi Hobby 190 with an AQ175A. It runs great except:
- When trying to pull out a water skier (hole shot) or similar (i.e. WOT from stop), the engine just cuts out
- When trying to accelerate hard-ish (not to WOT) from low-revs, the engine drops for a second and then accelerates normally
- If I manage to accelerate hard-ish and then throttle back (e.g. when the water skier doesn't get up), then the engine cuts out too
- Accleration with the drive disengaged seems fine, so maybe just a problem under load?

The problem seems to be getting worse with use.

If I can avoid the engine cutting out (a little slower acceleration --> tough for the water skier), then it runs up fine.

Any ideas I (relatively inexperienced) could try to solve this?

Could be fuel pump/hoses. You'd be calling for more fuel under load. or throttle cable. Check the movement of the throttle cable. Maybe getting stuck at times

sounds like you need to rebuild/clean the carburetor. The accelerator pump in the carb is probably tired and needs replacing

Many thanks for the quick replies and helpful tips. Regarding the accelerator pump:
- Where is it exactly?
- What does it look like?
- Is it simple enough to replace such that a relatively inexperienced person (but not with 2 left hands ;-) ) could swap it out?
- Is it necessary to clean/rebuild the carb if replacing the accelerator pump?

I guess my last post displayed my true level of ignorance :redface:. A little searching and reading goes a long way, I guess

It looks like a carb rebuild will be needed. So the remaining questions:
- Is the accelerator pump included in a standard rebuild kit?
- Anyone know where I can get such a kit in mainland Europe (I'm in Switzerland)? If not, I guess I'll need a good US address that is prepared to ship to Europe.
- Should I give this a go myself or wait for the end of the season and get the experts to do this for me?
- If I do do this myself, any idea how long it would take and what I need (tools, etc.) apart from the rebuild kit?
- P.S. How do I identify the carb (reference number) so as to make sure I get the right kit?

yes that is included in the kit. It is not particularly hard to do, buy a can of carb cleaner to spray out all the orifices, keep things in order and follow the drections. I would think it would be fairly easy to get parts over there as alot of the stuff I buy for my AQ151 comes from your side of the pond. I took both my carbs off and in 1-2 hours was back running again. You should have a serial number somewhere on your engine but with just the year and model number they should be able to match up the kit.

I just ordered the overhaul kit (841994) BUT there are no instructions included. Anyone know where I could download clear (step by step) instructions on how to do this? It would be great to have printed instructions on the table when I am doing this as I don't want to make mistakes --- we only have a week of our vacation left

I have never seen instructions. Just an exploded breakdown and some specs. Just dig into it with a clean work area and a couple of people watching where everything goes.

The overhaul kit has arrived. Before I did anything, though, I had a quick look at and around the carb. Believe it or not, I found a linkage (small one below the throttle linkage) that seem a little stuck. I seated it correctly (just pushed it in a couple of mm) --- and now the boat accelerates perfectly . So I have the overhaul kit if/when needed. But right now we're enjoying running the boat, water-skiiing, etc.

That sounds like the little lever that operates the accelerator pump.
I would still rebuild when you get a chance. It sounds like it needs it.
For my carb I found step by step on Youtube. Helped a lot. (Though the guy had stubby fingers and had a lot of trouble with little screws.) LOL
