Re: aq211a sp converting points to electronic ignition

I have converted my AQ125B from points to electronic ignition using a Pertronix kit.
I am very happy with it. It made the engine run much smoother and idle better.
The installation was relatively simple - just need to connect a few wires.
The only issue I had was that the timing was way different than the points so I had to play around with moving the distributor shaft one tooth. In the end I extended the timing bolt slot about 1/4" so it can be adjusted for the Pertronix or points.
I keep a set of points on the boat for an emergency spare.

I recently worked on an old AQ125A engine and replaced the points with the hot-spark module. This is similar to the Pertronix unit but at 1/2 the cost. Although it appears to work fine it just does not seem to be the same quality as Pertronix. And the instructions leave a lot to be desired in comparison. I would have struggled a little had I not seen the Pertronix instructions.
So it was fine for me to get a bench engine running for a test but I will stick with Pertronix for my actual boat engine as I feel more comfortable with it.

I did the hot-spark kit in my aq125a. Awesome. I set the gap and dwell on the points and it never ran this good. Just now on my second year with it.
I didn't remove the dist, did it in place.
Buy a new coil while you are at it.

You'll need a timing light and some TIM (thermal interface medium). I had some from working on pc's but you can get it at radioshack or pc stores, it didn't come in the kit.

There is a big difference in the distributors between the Volvo 4 cylinder OHC aq125 and your Chevy V8 aq211.

You may be able to install the kit without pulling the distributor, but you are still going to need to re-time it with a timing light.
