I realize you want a low budget,BUT, She's a Cobalt, thats a great boat, the damage was caused by a combination of electrolysis & salt water, must have alot of current in the water at the marina,Anyway....looking at the big picture, forget the lower unit, its trash.I would try to start engine, remove all plugs, remove coil wire, spray Blaster PB into each cylinder, then bump motor over, when, and only when, motor turns freely hook back up wires, spray carb cleaner add small amount of gas and see if she'll run,in the big picture sacrificing an impeller will be the least of your issues, gonna have to replace it anyway. So lets say she runs...Then try all the accessory lighting & switches, its possible the corrosion damaged the wiring,If all works, theres light at the end of the tunnel, before tearing the exhaust manifolds off, strip the interior, clean & store.i doubt theres much structural damage, these boats are all glass encapsulated so water penetration shouldn't be a problem,As for parts (outdrive ect..) south Florida is a graveyard of rebuilt drive&motor parts, get busy on the computer,Yea,its gonna get expensive, but its worth it,re-built and cleaned up she's worth between 15K - 18K. Remember...take it slow,be methodical, start & finish one project at a time or it will seem overwhelming..Good Luck Amigo. Keep us posted.

"tried turning the crank with a ratchet, but it just tightened the bolts. The batteries also are completely dead and tested bad today so I didnt crank it over. I will probably toss a car battery in there to test how she turns over and I guess do a compression test while I have the plugs out."

I would spray a generous amount of wd40 into the cylenders before you try to crank her over... Let is sit a couple of days. forst then retry with the wrench frist.

That is a good looking boat worth throwing a few $$ at it, but it won't be cheap. That drive is toast, so you will be looking for a new one Iwould get the whole assembly including transom shield. Hopefully you will be able to salvage the motor. I guess that is what happens when the anodes are not maintained. The salt water starts eating away at the aluminum.

Have a great day,

Rob.

The best thing to do is clean it up as best you can(inside & out) wash & wax, Then SELL IT ( E-bay/craigs list).. then buy a nice used boat in exellent shape.. lots of good deals to be had..

I have the plugs out and sprayed penetrant down in the cylinders last night and I will do it again today.

Its hard to tell from the picture, but the interior vinyl is pretty much shot. Its all hard and cracked and will need to be reupholstered.

We got the boat contingent that we wouldnt just sell it for a profit. If we do we gotta give some of the $$ to the buddy's family. We have a hydro hoist I am trying to sell to fund the repower so we dont have to come out of pocket with it.

The hull is in good conditon. The floorboard is all fiberglass and the stringers look sealed well with glass. Fuel tank is still an unknown.

I really want to get her going. It supposedly goes 65mph!

I do all my own work when I can so that will cut down costs a lot. I plan on buying a bravo 3 manual and seeing what it will take to get that rear "hub" or bearing carrier off so we can reseal the drive and rid it of that foul corroded piece of aluminum.

Still dont know about the engine. It probably works fine. Supposedly the previous owner just went to start the boat one day and the batteries were dead and he gave up on it.

THAT is a nice looking boat! I always liked the Cobalts!

I'll bet it sat in the marina until the batteries went completely dead, then with NO Mercathode, the Galvinators went work!! All that stainless steel and aluminum working with the electrolysis.....the aluminum loses every time!

At the bare minimum, (if the engine is not frozen) I would replace the drive, and transom/gimbal. All of it. I just looked on ebay. There's a bunch of Bravo stuff on there all the time. For about $5000-6000 you could have a REALLY nice boat. There's also a 6.2L MPI engine for sale too. Now you would have about $12000 in it. (don't count your labor)

Now do you see why they literally "gave" the boat away? If you ran it into a dealer the "fix" would easily cost more than the boat is worth. Now couple that up with the prospect of $6-8/gallon of gas There's not going to be a lot of people even interested in a boat that big.... there's a lot of us in "that boat" [pun intended]

Your other option is to find another damaged boat with a good engine/drive. That's what I did. I bought my 125hr since new, 1997 454/Bravo III with all acc, cables, gages, controls, etc......for $5000 out of craigslist.......that IS a gamble though. I gambled and won I guess....

I swapped out the OMC 460 Cobra for the Merc/Bravo. I have an overhead hoist and all the tools. It was a pretty big job but "do-able"

If the engine is frozen, you could get a longblock. You may need manifolds. You WILL need risers.

I would also get rid of the thru hull exhaust and put a Y-pipe/thru prop exhaust in it.....But that's just me....I didn't like my thru hull/capt call, It was just too noisy...

Good luck,

Rick

I bet the engine it fine, but you can never tell.

It has a thru hull exhaust and Ypipe thru prop exhaust. It has electric flappers so you can change between thru hull or thru prop.

Here are some more pics for your viewing pleasure. One of the very few cloudy days in San Diego setting up for the Red Bull Air Races today and tommorow.

I am gonna try to get her back on the water for less than $1000. Laugh if you want Negative Nancy's!

The boat has 450 hours on the meter.

Scraping the bottom and pulling the drive was fun. There was jellyfish funk all over the hull that would sting you if you touched it.

Here are some more pics. The last one is my true passion. Turbo 4 cyl Volvos! Its basically the same redblock engine as used in the boats. If you guys ever need to get rid of a Volvo boat engine let me know!!

You may luck out! I hope you do!

I'm with Bondo, I don't even think a recycler would give much for the drive! Keep the pictures coming!

We love pictures!

As far as I am concerned the drive is still good. I just need to remove that corroded bearing carrier and install a new one.

Why would I spend $2000-$5000 on a used, rebuilt, or new drive when I can probably salvage the current one with just a few new parts?? It spins just fine.

Here's a tip Find a local source for a product called Aerokroil. If you can't find it locally, you can get it from the mfg kano labratories, 2 16.5 oz bottles for $16 which includes shipping. That spray penetrant will be your new beat friend as you tackle that project.

Re: Aquired free boat. Ugly Bravo III and who knows what else...

It is sad to see a boat of that caliber neglected like that, what a waste, all someone had to do was some basic maintenance and they would still have a nice boat. Looks like it was just stored with no cover and no concern for the drive system. I would go over the whole thing with a fine tooth comb and figure out all of the problems. Good luck with that drive though, it looks like it has been through the war. The biggest problem that I see with it is not what it looks like on the outside but what is going on internally and within the water passages, that is the rub, I would guess after a lot of labor and frustration you are going to end up replacing at least the lower unit. $1000.00 is wishful thinking though, it needs new trim rams and probably a reseal at a minimum, and that is if the internals are all ok.

Those pictures bring a tear to my eyes. An expensive, fine piece of machinery wasted like that. The rust trails on that starboard (i think it was) exhaust didn't look promising.

Good luck!

The Transom Assembley isn't lookin' all that healthy either.......

The exhaust Manifolds look like they're about ready to Explode......

What gets me is how anyone would let a boat like that just go to rot....I mean ok so you are loaded and have lots of money does that mean you never respect anything? Anytime I see stuff like this I just wanna slap the old owner in the back of the head and say are you THAT stupid?

sorry had to vent lol
