dont let newport dave and the cute electronic readouts fool you. it still boils down to basic 4 stroke theory. fuel air spark. a spark plug reading will go further than any computer readout. but for conversations sake. you can make a fuel injected engine do anything a carb engine will do-and then some.

I've been turning Wrenches for longer than I care to remember............<br /><br />In the 70s, I thought all this New Smog Stuff was Junk,+ I Hated them........<br /><br />In the 80s,+ 90s... I Dreamed of the days of the Simple motors of the 70s........<br /><br />Today, I understand the Need,+ the Advantages of the EFIs........<br /><br />I'm Sure, Once I've gone out + Bought all the Diagnostic Computers,<br />I'm Going to Love this technology Too....... ;)

in the 70s I thought they were junk rember how you felt when HEI cameout?? :)HEI=SIMPLE<br />in the 80s they WERE junk, especially if it had an electronic feedback carb and a smog pump<br />in the 90s along came OBDII ahhhhhhhhhhh im in heaven now :) <br />i wish the feds would mandate marine engines be OBDII make life alot simpler for everyone,

I respectfully disagree can you tell compression by looking at a spark plug? how about whether a valve seal is leaking? what about a partially plugged injector?? how about a worn cam lobe?if you know how to use them, an engine anylizer, combined with a gas anylizer will tell you ANYTHING about the running condition of the engine, from a compression test(no you dont need to remove spark plugs to do a compression test anymore) to a lean/rich mixture,and everything in between and ALOT, repeat ALOT faster, bout 5 minutes to hookup, and usually under an hour you can find most any problems. Well worth the hundred bucks for the test IMHO<br />But mechanical things are fun too, ever look at the innards of an old old cash register?? really amazing IMHO<br /><br />PS its been proven over and over that carbs can make more power than EFI at least thats what ive read and my dyno guy friends say.

It all depends on the individual mechanic you have. Some will want to learn the new stuff and have the shop facilities to do so, others will not and are most comfortable with what they know. So if you need a mechanic to do most of your work, and you like the one you have, owning what he can/will fix may make your life easier!<br />My shop does sterndrives and OBs, although they do not work on the newer DI or 4 stroke OBs yet. They are one of the few places that really knows OMC Cobras, so I keep going there and have had minimal problems. <br />BTW, they advised me if I do get an OB to get one of the conventional 2 strokes since it is not clear yet which of the new technologies is best for OBs. So for now I'll stick with the old tech Cobra.
