The porting is different between the 90 and the 110/112/115/140.
Well I'll be damned. Finally went out back to look. Guess the ports are smaller on the 90. Coulda sworn I remembered em bein the same? My bad.

(Black block is a '85 90. White block '83 140.)

As for exhaust, the '77 140 mid is supposed to be the bad boy. The only true 'megaphone' tuner.

Interesting. So the megaphone just hangs inside the leg unlike the later one (same as the 90) that seals to the adapter piece and exits thru hub. Looks to go about 2/3 the length of the later one.

There's an outer 'can' that covers the megaphone. Which has the water tube incorporated into it. You also need the manifold that bolts to the bottom of the adapter plate. Couple more pieces than the later version.

Bet they discontinued it due to cost and complexity. May also have been only a small difference in HP, or is there data to show otherwise?

On a light boat it was worth about 1/2 to 1 mph. On a light boat. On a heavier boat there was almost no noticeable difference.

High performance hull, small Alison, Checkmate, some Glastrons and Sidewinders, and racing hulls come to mind. Heavier boats would definitely be 16ft and up runabouts

Would a StingRay 16' hull like mine at 865 lbs be considered a heavy hull or a light hull ? I thoight it was light. Compared to the weight of all these newer hulls that are 14' and weigh in at over 1500 lbs just the boat alone. Its crazy how heavy new boats are.

My tin boat is ~900lb dry. Add 300 for engine, and by the time there's a battery and fuel and operator, about 1500-1600lb. Not light.

Empty hull weights
Our 14 ft Skagit supposedly weighed 335 lbs. SKAGIT.JPG

Our Evinrude Sweet 16 was 810 lb

I believe the Baja's posed to be around 700 or so. Which is not particularly light.

Latest project was 390lbs from the factory. And that was with wood in it. No wood now.

It looks like its in great shape. It reminds me a lot of our first boat we had when I was a young kid. It was a 12 or 13' boat just like that except smaller with a Johnson 40 hp on it. It was a 68. Lasted forever too. We didn't sell it in till 1990. A few years after getting our 14' 88 Sunray that has a 60 hp evinrude on it. Then in 2014 we bought the 90 hp we have now.. I bet 50 mph in that would happen for sure once you up your timing and use a 19p. I would hope as well for 50 mph out of our 1992 Stingray if I ever rebuilt it and do anything extra to it.

19" wheel will be here in a couple of days. Timing is already at max spec based on the Joe Reeves method. I run premium fuel as a precaution.

Aluminum or stainless ? When we first pulled our boat out this year. We rebuilt the carbs on it . They were all gummed up and the bottom on was leaking a turtle wax type looking fluid from the front of it. From what the mechanics have told us it was due to running regular fuel in them . It apparently can have up to 10% ethanol in our area. Which is a bad thing for our engines and or 2 stroke oil mix I guess. Idk totally. They just told me the basics and said to always run supreme . Is there any truth to that at all ?

Aluminum. My pocketbook didn't like the look of a stainless one. This gearcase has gone through one prop due to rocks, and the 17 has a few dings too. Don't want to take the chance of grenading my gears, and I'm not chasing the last 0.1mph either.

For fuel, the pumps up here in remotest Canuckistan say "up to 10% ethanol" generically on the pump. Now, we can dispense 87, 89 or 91 (R+M/2) from that pump and I have no idea whether grade makes any difference.

I usually buy my fuel from Costco, who advertise it as "Top Tier". So I've got that going for me... which is nice.

I was under the impression that a nice ss wheel would give a few extra mph at wot. Maybe 2 to 3 mph at best. However , I am with you on the not wanting to run one just in case. I wouldn't want to destroy a good lower unit. Which make and model of a 19p did you get ?

I am located in Nova Scotia. So the grades of fuel for us are the same as out west. As for top tier. That i couldnt say. I just always get 91. 😌 Just in case they are right about our engines prefering it.

I bought a run-of-the-mill BRP wheel. Maybe if I feel like doing a fun project, and funds/space permit, I'll find a 15' speed hull and put the motor on it with a jackplate and...
