I'm curious to know if anyone heard of power packs being repaired. I suspect that since they're solid state and sealed with potting compound, that they're strickly disposable.

Extremely, along with the cash in your wallet to replace them.

Rapair Inc. rebuilds powerpacks and other electrical items. CDI Electronics is a division that sells new electrical parts as sometimes it is cheaper than rebuilding. These items are sold only thru marine professionals, see your dealer or mechanic.

I think I'll just rip my old one apart and see what makes it tick!!!! Replacement was only $100 including shipping. Could be worse, I guess.

Re: Are power packs repairable?

I fixed mine on my '76 Johnson '85. In de-potting mine, I bust the small leads off a couple of the coil drive SCRs. The SCRs were manufactured by Teccor Inc. but had proprietary markings on them. I eventually, came up with what I thought may be a suitable replacement SCRs. I did ultimately get the pack running, but I never tested it beyond running on the drive. Because I wasn't 100% sure of the SCRs, I bought a new pack anyway. I use the repaired pack as a backup now. Unless you have a decent amount of electronics knowledge and capability you are best off not attempting to repair your pack. I was surprised at the root cause of my pack's failure -corrosion. I had always assumed the encapsultion (potting) prevented any moisture ingress, apparently not so.
