That's Tower of Power.... "A lot of gas" is a subjective term. 2-cycle engines are notoriously inefficient, but it will depend a great deal on what you do with it, what type of prop (pitch) you have, how you drive it, the weight of the boat and the load, etc, etc. You will be measuring it in gallonS per hour.

For a prop-rated 2-stroke (your '88 is prop-rated), divide HP by 10 and add a bit and that's your WOT GPH. For example, a prop-rated 115HP Inline Six is probably gonna burn around 14 GPH at full throttle.

You'll find that there's a "best cruising speed" for your particular boat/engine combination that'll produce the most efficient fuel consumption rate vs. speed (miles per gallon). Inlines like to cruise somewhere in the 3500-4500 range and are quite happy to plink along around 4000 all day.

If you prop your motor to run approx 5500 rpm at full throttle with a light load and only the operator in the boat, it'll be as efficient as you can get it. If you overprop (more pitch than the motor can handle) the engine it'll have terrible mpg and it's bad for pistons/bearings. Underpropping (too little pitch) will increase fuel consumption and may reduce bearing life a bit but is not nearly as bad as overpropping.

Wilson, You might check the RPMs on that motor at WOT. it sounds like you might be overpropped.
