Asbestos shingle heat shield?

Ray,<br />If you're referring to a roofing shingle... I would urge you to forget using that as the heat shield, because what is typically referred to as an asbestos shingle is primarily made up of tar (petroleum) & cellulose (paper). If you were lucky enough that it didn't catch fire on you, it would surely make a mess of runny tar all over your engine...<br /><br />I believe what you want/need to accomplish, is to use an acytelene torch, with a pin-point flame, to put a bunch of heat in one locale, rather than spread ing it around like would be done with a propane torch.<br /><br />Just be careful to put the flame ONLY where you want it (NOT on the aluminum) as it is hot enough to cause you some issues with the aluminum...<br /><br />Good Luck... Ray, asbestos siding shingles will work, however they must be dry! As a plumber I've used them when all else fails, but if they are holding moisture they will pop, sending hot fragments everywhere! Make sure they are dry & you will be OK. Be careful with potential gas vapors & have fire ext. ready. Good luck.

how about if I put it in a 250 degree oven (although the one woman riot squad has been suspicious of me since I powder coated some brackets in the oven!)(stunk!) that should raise it above boiling point and dry out the shingle ... tho they are dry in the garage<br /><br />that damn garage ... what does it cost for a small dumpster, one of the pickup bed sized ones? any idea?<br /><br />thanks

Ray, if they were stored indoors you should be fine.

sounds good outraged<br /><br />they should do ok, I understand there are heat diffusers at the plumber supply houses, but I have the shingles and I am on a ridiculously tight budget - instant daddy to a 15 year old and all, lol, arrrgh, who will be driving in three months but thats ok<br /><br />I still wonder if it isnt best to cut the bolts off at the head and then heat the exposed studs, that way the head doesnt hget too heated ...<br /><br />tho its already been hit with heat by the previous owner
