asking the experts

My frend just gave me a 1957 10 hp evenrude out board motor that was in his shed for at least 20 years,
I cleaned it up and tryed to start it but the pull rope does not engage the model and serial number is 10014 09550 Any one know the correct year?
And where can I get the parts for the pull starter?
It worked before I sprayed it down to clean off the dust and grease.
It fired up in one pull after replacing the gas lines ans spark pluge also replaced the impeller.
Any help I can get would be great as this is my first trolling motor referb.
I was told I need a new spring or a new weel the spring sets in where in the heck would I find on of thoes?

excuse the lingo, I really dont know what the stuff is called.

There are little levers that engage when you pull the rope. They get dirty, and clogged with crap, and springs could be damaged/worn out too. remove the pull starter and clean everything. it should fix things.

or WD-40 it up. but I think that is just a temporary fix, and more dirt, dust, and grime will build up in there.

many parts are still available, there is not a parts list or diagrams online.

remove the recoil stater, clean and lubricate the under side. what has happened is the "tine" is not fliping out to engage the flywheel, when you pull the rope.

If the recoil craters on you, you can still start it by using a rope and the notch in the flywheel.

Remove the starter and examine what it is doing. Is the recoil turning and rectracting? When you pull the cord take notice as to what it is or is not doing, helps with the troubleshooting.
