Assistance with 1984 8HP Evinrude

Evening folks, I have a 1984 8HP Evinrude (E8RCRM) that I could use some assistance with. The engine goes into forward and runs along just fine (even feels like a bit too far in gear if that makes sense). However, when I put it in reverse, the prop doesn't spin very much, hardly moves the boat and doesn't feel like its all the way in gear. If I remember correctly, putting pressure on the shifter, it seems to move a touch more but not 100% - was last year. I was wondering if anyone could please tell me what kind of a job it would be to remove the lower unit and adjust the shifter linkage, if it's possible. Or maybe there is something else causing it? How did the Oil Look? Milky, shiny/metallicy?

Sorry----I guess I missed that you drained the oil !!----I do not believe there are any adjustments.----Good luck

Definitely a little milky as the seals need replacing (not shiny/metalic) but was really hoping to adjust the shifter first before tearing the lower end apart for the seals. Some sites show certain parts for this motor as not available, so I'm aiming to make sure the gears will work properly. I've watched a couple videos on youtube but none were for this exact model.

I have never taken one of these modern.... GC apart but if the shift rod end is not worn it seems to be the only part controlling the shift cam/plunger to move frwd and reverse gears.

surely someone here has taken on apart ?

Can the shift rod be pulled out for inspection without problems to reinsert it back in the GC ???

Yes there is no adjustment on the outboard. Look to see if something is blocking the shifter handle otherwise your reverse gear may be shot. Used lower units are a dime a dozen for that model.

To remove, just undo the 3 lower bolts and slide the unit down and off. If it doesn't want to come off, your driveshaft may be rusted to the crank and then the fun begins. Good luck.

poor shifting habits ... " being to gentle" or shifting at to high a rpm will mess things up eventually. inspecting the shift dog should not be to bad and a good opportunity to replace all seals and do a pressure test afterwards. lots of utubes to help.

There are no adjustments.-----Take gearcase apart.-----Dive in and see what is wrong.----Easy to see what is wrong !

Are you using any kind of Remote Control on this engine?

Wow thanks for all the advice. Ill take it apart this week. No remote controls just been abused as a cottage boat I'd guess. Ill keep u posted.

I have the 6 hp version of the same engine. Exactly the same as far as the gears and shifting are concerned.
Look at the cam #29 in the first diagram below

Also the bevel gears which link the shift handle with the shift rod. (# 10 and #78 in the second diagram). I am wondering if they have been assembled incorrectly and are one tooth out.

It is possible that a different lower unit has been fitted.----For a few years they installed some that did not use a clutch dog.-----Make sure you replace the seals as water in these units is a big issue.
