I have heard that you can vaccinate your dog for rabies at home. I know a lot of you are dog owners. Have you ever heard of this? I had someone at work say that it is a lot cheaper and you get paperwork or something for their license. Can someone tell me something about it? Thanks!

Yes, you can home vaccinate your animals for rabies and several other diseases....However, I have never seen a rabies vaccine that includes a certifcate that just anybody can fill out when it comes to getting a dog license....Unless you are vaccinating a whole kennel, I can't see it being worth saving the 5-8 bucks a vet usually charges.

On a money saving note, you can home treat your dogs for heartworms using Ivomec cattle wormer in the right dosage. It doesn't take but a little bit and is a big money saver for someone with several dogs.

In NJ the rabies vaccine is free and adm by vets at free clinics held by every township once a year, mandated by law. its paid for by the license fees.

Can't do it here in Il. The trouble is that rabies tags are regulated by the county through vets. The vet takes responsibility for reporting the shot.

I would like to see an at home rabies vaccine available here but I don't think it's gonna happen. The il. state likes the present system and it works. If you could get all the paperwork along with the shot, I don't see a problem with giving the shot at home.

I vac. my dog all the time( once a year in the cool of Feb. March). I live in Mo and it's legal here. I buy the vac at my local feed store they even give the tag for the collar with it. I pay about 4.00 for the rabies and about 3.00 for a 7 in 1 shot that protects against distemper, provo, etc. The needles are .75 . To give a shot just pinch up a bunch of skin at the base of the neck. Then inject the shot into the skin fold. Rub the skin gently for a couple minutes after the shot to reduce the chance of knots. Don't inject too fast but don't dawdle either. If you give 2 shots such as I do, use two new needles. Don't reuse a needle. This works great my dogs have always been healthy and happy. Do check your local state laws some states don't allow this. Most feed or pet stores can advise you on this. Hope this helps. God Bless. Dave

I have always used ivomec on my Mt. Curs with great success but I have always been told not to use it on Beagles or Collies. Is there any truth to this and if so any one know why?

Used to be able to vaccinate for rabies. I used to do it. Druggist friend of mine said that the vets "tied up the vaccine" so that they (druggists) couldn't get it any longer. I don't know if it was through law, or just agreement between vets and drug companies.

i've never seen a vet charge $6-8 for anything.

maybe try tractor supply co. they have monthly shot clinics at the store around here....1st sat i think.

getting needles can be tough in some places too. i was giving one of my dog allergy shots and sometimes had problems getting needles.

We've got one fair priced vet in town. A 1 year rabies shot is 5 bucks. 3 years is 8 bucks.

Heck, he did surgery on my boxer a couple of years ago and took off a tumor....35 bucks.

Our vet gets 39 bucks just for the office visit. If the vet even sees the dog after that the bill jumps up. Wish I could find insulin cheap but its locked up too. Vetsulin is being dicontinued and only human insulin will be available for dogs is what I was told.

Ditto. Seems the only vets I can find are the 'screw you' ones. I literally pay twice as much down here in Florida as I did in Arkansas.

They also laid on the guilt about not treating our cats for heart worms & not expressing our dogs anal glands. I've had outside cats in the family live upwards of 20 years & never once treated for heart worms. And who of you over 30 EVER heard of squeezing a dogs anal glands when growing up? I love my dog & all, but I can't get on board that. I'll pay a groomer for that business if it's really necessary.

Re: At home rabies vaccinations for my dog?

This one of those things that I once questioned. If my dog is an inside dog and has no threat of being bitten by a rabid animal why have one? So I asked my legal advisor. My attorney said that when you take your dog out in public and it bites someone, with the shot being administered by a licenesed vet you will be covered as for proof of the rabies shot. You may be liable for the bite from the dog, but the victim won't have to go through the treatment for rabies. Makes sense to me. Got to CYA in these times.......SS
