Made the jump to AT&T last night, including 2 iPhones. Found out we could get a 24% discount on the basic rates, as DW's work is an affiliate.

With my OCD, it was tough to give up the old Mortorola clam phone, but now I'm definetely warming up to the iPhone. Since it looks very fragile, I carried it like a newborn, until I put it into an Otterbox carry case today. Now It's very well protected.

The 3G network is spotty at home for data, but works with our DSL through the wifi just great. The 3G internet rocked when I was in the big city today.

Regarding AT&T support. The Tech stayed at the phone store an hour past closing, as there was some system errors registering the phones. Top notch service. Today DS has a problem downloading a game. I called tech support and within mere seconds was talking to a clear-speaking American tech. He was extremely polite, clear and helpful.

So far so good.

I am going to say this one time. All wireless carriers sucks. I don't care about what fancy schmancy maps they show you. It is a device that send and receive signals. I have a device with almost every carrier. I have an iphone with AT&T(work provided), a mobile phone with T-mobile(personal), and a wireless card with Verizon(work provided). Each and every one of them has experienced a problem getting reception...both rural and urban. Don't tell me how your carrier gets service everywhere, they all have their quirks. I remember one time that my wife and I have the same carrier and the same phones. We were driving down the road and she had 4 bars and I had 1. 1 feet from each other.

Customer service?..I'll tell you what. That is the same as well. It is a business and there are rules. If there is a legitimate problem, they will work it out for you. However, if it is a rule issue, you are SOL no matter who you are with.

The iphone is really not a phone. It is a crazy fun device that you customize to make it to just about everything you want it to do. I really didn't know what all the buzz is about until I got to spend some time with it. It is not the very, very best phone. From what I am seeing out there, there are a lot of carriers catching up to it. But all the nay sayers..just go and play with one. You will see what all the hoopla is about.

At&T love/hate is all about coverage. I havent heard much bad from AT&T from folks that have good coverage. Funny, I was in VA this past weekend and the gf family hates Verizon, Why?, Close to no service where they live.
The ideal situation would be to find someone that has AT&T and see if you can get the person to drive with you for a few hours to see where do you have service. No provider out there had full coverage everywhere...

It's been said before, but I'll say it again. Check with friends to determine coverage in your area, and specifically around your home and/or office.

Do NOT go by what the AT&T rep tells you. Do NOT go by their coverage map- it's a rough approximation of what you may expect, but by no means binding. And your local company being absorbed by at&t does NOT guarantee better coverage- it's not unusual for signal to seem to DROP locally for both companies. Don't know why, I just hear the customer complaints.

Smartphones are where it's at, and once you own one, you won't want to go back. I've been using a Blackberry Bold on at&t in Gulf Coast Florida, and I love it. I get better coverage in and around my house than I did with the big V, or anyone else.

Once you have a new smartphone, it's all about the apps. Just like iBoats, hit the forums and you'll learn faster than you can absorb. And I never spend money on a new app without thorough investigation first- there are frequently free ones that work as well or better.

I love my new iphone.

I had used a PDA for several years and liked being able to sync the PDA with Microsoft Outlook, for tasks, calendar and contacts. The downside was that I had to carry both the PDA and a cell phone. If I wanted music files, needed to carry a MP3 player.

Now it's all in one, plus much more.

Skipped the $10/mo for GPS, but I can use google maps for turn-by-turn driving directions.
How did I ever live without Internet on the go?

The only problem, which was a large one, is that the 3G network is spotty where I live and in some rural areas when truck driving. Calls drop or will not ring through, even with a good signal. I just disable 3G and use the EGDE network. Works fine for calls, but browsing is much slower. WIFI works better than 3G is there is a close signal. Wills switch on 3G if in the city.

Who would have thought that the very first Apple computer I have ever owned, would be carried around in my shirt pocket?

Iphone rocks.

Assuming you have at&t, your calls should not drop as you change from 3g-edge-gprs-gsm. Data services will not be available in gsm but calls and sms should. If you are having that problem you need to contact your provider.
I think the iphone will make calls using wifi if no cell signal present without the use of a vonage type application and the extra charge. The blackberry won't and it is the only thing I would like to see in the future for the blackberry.

there is an app called line-2 for iphone, which uses the wi-fi signal to makes calls. It's similar to google voice, magic jack. It gives your your own second line with seperate phone #, mail box, etc..It doesn't use up any of your minutes.

blackberry on verizon can use skype to make wifi calls...
