Had an old Atlas Royal 12 HP given to me if I would get a boat trailer out of a yard now. Motor turns, has good compression, spark, and appears to be complete. Model 12D13A Serial 603777. Near as I can tell it is a 1957. Someone painted it black so it appears to need a complete going over and new paint. A shade of Red was the original color. Found one photo on line of a 12 HP that is painted a bright red. The red under the cowling gasket is a dull red. This will be my first outboard to restore. Have done cars, motorcycles, and small engines before. Found a 6 gallon OMC metal fuel tank for $5.00 at a mission that isn't rusty so that, a new head gasket and carb kit is my investment so far. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Carb kit yes but why a head gasket? You have good compression. Water pump and plugs and points and put in a tub and let it rip.

One of those in case I need it I have it and don't have to go searching for one.

Your motor is a 1956, which I believe was the last year for the Atlas Royal brand. Sounds like a cool motor.

Thanks for the input TN-25. Have discovered a Gale/Buccaneer has the same starting instruction decals on the front. Have inquiries out about them now. Mine are very worn and not readable. Some of the other decals are kind of available as they are similar to a 5 HP Royal.

The motor was made by Gale and I have the repair manual for it. Its an extensive PDF file and covers all Gale motors. If you would like a copy shoot me your email address.
