Attention Electrical Wizards!!!

Hi all,
I'm new to this boating thing and I have some ??'s concerning no fire to the plugs. It's on a 1989 Bayliner capri with a 85 hp force I/O. No fire to the plugs so I took the panel that the coils and the cd boxes are attached to and turned it over.
I unplugged the connection from the cd box to the coil and turned it over and got no fire from the box to the coil with a tester light. I usually overhaul muscle cars and have no idea what I'm looking at or what could be the problem. I have no experience with stators or the like.
I haven't bought the boat yet but the guy only wants $200. It needs flooring and I think the transom is bad too. Check out the pics and please help if you can!!

The way pictures are on this new format makes it very hard to see anything but sounds and looks like an outboard engine not an I/O inboard outboard. If it is you would be much beter off posting in the Force outboard fourm.

If the floor is bad and transom bad you can bet the stringers are also bad. For me that means the boat has no value at all.
It can be restored at a high price and years of work but I would walk away.

well if you got no fire from coil the coil is probably bad. but at the price of those things on top of a full restoration i'd tuck tail and run.

That is an "L" drive. It was known to be a poor design. Some run very well for years and some are nothing but trouble. THERE IS A REASON WHY THE OWNER ONLY WANTS 200 bucks!

The electrical ignition is standard and parts are available but new, they are pricey. Engine parts are also --for the main--standard and available. BUT: Some of the drive parts are difficult to get.

At 200 bucks, if you don't mind working on it -- possibly every weekend-- it is OK but still overpriced. Just realize what you may be getting into.

Again, at 200 bucks, you could part out the engine and drive and make a couple of dollars--but is it worth your time.

You already know that the hull is in bad condition and needs restoring. You have a boat that almost no one with any knowledge wants to take, much less buy. Even if you do restore it you will be lucky to sell it at a loss. Offer to take it off his hands for nothing, or offer 50 bucks maximum and play with it some in the backyard or driveway. Just remember that it is going to cost you to take it to the landfill.

Basically, unless you want to experiment and play with the boat and engine for a hobby sort of thing, RUN, don't walk away! Sometimes a bargain is no bargain

Ditto. Those CDI boxes are $180 each. Coils around $70 each. Stator and trigger, a couple hundred more. You could be $600+ into ignition parts, and you don't even know if it has a bad piston/bearings/cylinder/etc. The deck, transom, stringers.......you would be ahead of the game building your own boat from scratch. (Because you'll be rebuilding everything on this.) How fast can you run?????

Kind of like buying a basic, no value car like a Ford Pinto. With a bad frame. Bad ignition system. Unknown engine condition. A recalled tranny. Rusted out floorboards and maybe the fuel tank. And you want to go drive it through Deathy Valley in the summer with the wife and kids? At least teh wrecking yard will pay you the scrap value of $50 to get rid of it. The boat....you'll have to pay them!
