Automotive equivalent for a Mercruiser cooling system hose?

This is for a '89 4.3 - I'm looking for item # 32-87108, "hose, thermostat" and goes from the water pump to the thermostat on the starboard side of the engine. It looks like this....

Anyone know of an automotive equivalent? A trip to Oreily's and walking down the hose section didn't produce much. Was trying to find one locally, but if not then I'll order one from the marine store here on iboats.
Thanks!

Re: Automotive equivalent for a Mercruiser cooling system hose?

im guessing you already checked i boats????

Yes I did - please read my initial thread.

i know you asked for a car part but most cars dont use special hoses designed for a boat vice versa

Randy - FYI, my Mercruiser (and many others) are GM engines, which means there may be automotive crossovers. Since a marine engine cycles either fresh water or coolant, I'm interested to hear how a marine hose could possibly be different from a hose for an automobile, other than the price of course.

Just because it's on a boat, doesn't mean that an auto application won't work. What do you think the hydraulic trim runs on? Guess what, it's Auto trans fluid. Does your boat have an automatic transmission?

An auto hose will work just fine if you find one with the right curve and bend to it.
Check Napa if you have one in your area. They do have a marine book and some parts on their computer.
Oriely's is a bunch of idiots in my area.

Thanks Gary. I figured there wouldn't be an issue using an automotive hose, its just finding one!
LOL about Oriely's - same issue here. I'll try Napa or AdvanceAuto

Worst comes to worse that is OMC or BRP part number 0312781,any BRP-Johnson-Evinrude dealer can get it.
0312781

That Merc hose listed above should work too...

Napa and Sierra marine are the same part numbers too.

The thermostat hsg is unique to Merc. that being a molded hose you probably wont find an automotive that will work.

Randy J Do not use automotive ignition or charging on a boat. Unless the thing has an open engine compartment. Makes a lake bomb with a unknown fuse. Automotive hose is great on the fuel system until someone surveys the boat and knocks you on it. Or you sell it and it ruptures and the new owner sues you. Cooling system will probably be ok but why risk it?

Ayuh,... It'll be tough to find an automotive hose like That 1....

Most cars have a Radiator between where that hose starts, 'n where that hose ends....

Re: Automotive equivalent for a Mercruiser cooling system hose?

Not changing the subject, but to Randy on the flywheel teeth, I have in the past used a cut-off wheel on a grinder to cut the old flywheel ring off (one cut anywhere will break it loose), then put the new ring in the oven for a while to heat it up and let it expand, then grab it with some pliers and take it to the flywheel and pop it on real quick while it's real hot. All you need is the few thousandths of an inch to get it on, which you get from the oven heat. Just have to sneak it past the lady!

To the OP, you might could try to check a local salvage yard if you're lucky enough to have one around your area. Or ebay? Might get lucky... Good luck.

Re: Automotive equivalent for a Mercruiser cooling system hose?

Well I stand corrected - Oreily's did have the hose I was looking for. Apparently they have a marine cross reference and located it by the part number.
Thanks all for the assistance

Huh???
Have you tried re-reading any of your posts before posting?
I make a lot of spelling and grammatical errors, but some of your replies are almost impossible to figure out what you are trying to say.

Re: Automotive equivalent for a Mercruiser cooling system hose?

All,
I meant to do post this earlier - for anyone in the same boat (no pun intended), the O'reilly part number for the hose is 21801.

link - http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/detail/GAT0/21801.oap?keyword=21801

Thanks again for the help. And yes Randy J, I've got a case of spring fever as well. It was 68 here last week and my lower unit was still sitting on the workbench........

Thanks Betayv - I tried a couple of different flex hoses, but in order to get the angle the hose became pretty long and looped out quite a bit. It probably would have worked fine if not for the sharp 90 degree turn the original had to make. I'm glad I found the stock hose though - I was really hoping that I could pick one up locally.
