Re: autopilot selection

Im wanting to install an AP on my 2359 trophy. Its similar in weight & size to your boat. My homework brings me to the EV200 sport pilot from Raymarine. Item # RayT70159. It sells for $1800.00. Ive read its much improved over their older sport pilot. they discontinued those.

If you're looking at cable drive, "much improved" doesn't say much. The old ones where absolute junk. Made even worst with a worm/sloppy steering cable. See post #12.

Re: autopilot selection

I have power assisted Teleflex steering, Not push /pull cable. this is on a 5.7 merc inboard/outdrive. I almost bought a sport pilot a few years back, but was told by West Marine to stay away because of a lot of problems. Raymarine stopped making them. I understand they have now upgrade the drive gears to steel. The new system has only been available since last summer so I cant get many user reviews yet. I have read some good reports. I don't think Raymarine would release their new product without a lot of testing. And Trolling would be a lot easier with an AP. I was hoping to get some feedback from anyone with firsthand knowledge of this unit.

Re: autopilot selection

Dingbat, looks like you have hydraulic steering, you have way more choices. To upgrade would be too costly for me

Your steering is already hydraulic. Why would you want a steering wheel mount unit in the first place?

Upgraded gears would have no effect on the wondering and meaning associated with cable steering units

Re: autopilot selection

Pretty sure I have the same steering system as the OP, Power assisted Teleflex. no hydraulic pump. Not much choice other than wheel pilots. Hoping along with fortunate Son Fishing to get some feedback on The ev200 from Raymarine.

Re: autopilot selection

You are in the same situation as I am. I have a 1997 Bayliner Express Cruiser cuddy 22.5ft with a Merc I/O and Teleflex power assisted rack and pinion steering. I just went through the autopilot nightmare. You have 2 choices:

1: convert to hydraulic steering, and then pick whatever autopilot you want.

2: go to OCTOPUS | Autopilot Drive Systems, and pick the drive unit you want...either helm mounted, or engine compartment mounted. The octopus drive will act similar to the hydraulic autopilot pump. The helm octopus requires you to just attach your current steering cable to it. Then choose your autopilot electronics and wire it to the octopus drive. Bang ur done. If your current steering system has a "non feedback" design, then chose the helm octopus. If your current system does NOT have a "non feedback" feature, then choose the engine compartment unit...this unit slaves onto your power assist steering cylinder on the back of the motor. Then once again, hook up your preferred electronics package, and bang your done. I recommend getting the rudder feedback sensor too.

I went with the engine compartment octopus drive with rudder sensor and a Garmin GHP12 electronics package, all wired into a nmea2000 network and garmin gps/chart plotter/sonar combo. The autopilot setup cost me about $3200, and that's installing it myself. But the fist of converting to hydraulic and purchasing a hydraulic autopilot costs even more. it me, it's definitely worth the investment. I use it trolling on Erie and Ontario, and it makes it waaaaay more fun.

Re: autopilot selection

This isn't yours? Teleflex Seastar? Power Assist

What generates the the "power" in the system?

In a stock power assisted steering setup, there is a small cylinder running horizontal across the back of the motor. This power assist cylinder gets it's pressure directly from the motor. Cable steering engages it. It's different than the link you posted.

Re: autopilot selection

The power assist system on the 5.7 merc is a lot like conventional autos. similar hydraulic belt driven pump on front of the engine that is linked to a slave valve that sends fluid to a cylinder that will (assist) your cable to steer the boat.

That's too bad. I don't know anyone who has used a cable steer AP that would do it again. Then again, we're fishing coastal waters. Fighting wind, tides and rough seas is a given. Should give better results under lesser conditions.

Re: autopilot selection

Ya, I hate to spend 2K just to find out its not gonna cut it. I troll a lot so would be nice to get a break from the helm. Like I said this EV200 is new. Cant see Raymarine put out another problem AP so soon!!! Guess id best wait a bit.

Re: autopilot selection

I do not have any power assistance in my steering. Under the dash there is a green gizmo about 18" long (estimated length) from that a cable to the back of the boat and an arm that pushes/pulls on the Volvo 270 out drive. No pumps. My buddy has a 20-21ft tiarra with an autopilot and his is cable steered as well. (His is winterized and unsure what kind of pilot he has, I was going to just get the same as him but with it being shrink wrapped he couldn't give me any info) he has no issues with his. My manual is in my boat so I cannot look up my steering info.

Octopus cable and simrad ap24 is what I'm going with! Went to a sport show today and talked with raymarine and simrad. Sounded like the simrad is the way to go

OK I'm mixed up ha. I am going with the new sport pilot. Suits me needs. In my price range. Sounds easy to install. I'll let you know how it goes in mid to the end of may. (If the lakes unfreeze)

did you get the EV100? I'm looking at it for my boat. I think to use it, you need to switch over to hydraulic
so you can add a pump.
