avoiding a mechanical bond

is there any way to avoid a mechanical bond to glass? (old glass)
i know that acetone helps..but....can it be done properly?

man your quick! its 2 in the morn on the west coast!

i want to really "loosen up" the current old fiberglass so i can get a good bond with the new glass/resin.

i know acetone left for a little while will "soften" the old glass.
is there any way to increase the strength of the bond between old glass and new? so a mechanical bond doesnt occure.

and could you please re check black stuff in rebuilding?

i've always used a good sanding to get the dead off the top, and rough up for the bond.

A Mechanical Bond is the Only bonding factor in rebuilding Old Glass,.....

You can Not reverse the chemical process that happened Years ago.....

Sanding with Course paper is the way to Go.......

Like Bond-o said, a mechanical bond is mostly what you'll be getting on old glass, so you want that mechanical bond to be as good as possible. Use a small grinder with 36 grit discs and you'll be fine.

I don't think I've ever seen a black waxy product used in a bilge and I think that's why you didn't get many responses to that question.
I did use car under coating to seal some exposed foam on my jet boat though.

I used 24 grit on my angle grinder and it worked great. It eats through material fast and roughs up the surface for the new glass to stick to.
