I have an outdoor awning that I want to install, I have to find the studs on the house outside, It is a cape cod with no over hang, tried to use a stud finder over the vinyal siding with no luck, any thoughts of how to find the studs, I have four brackets that have to be bolted with 2 in lag bolts dead center into the studs! Thanks for any replys!

Re: awning

Windows are normally framed between studs. Find out what center your studs are on (usually 16" and you can do this from the inside of your house if your studfinder will work there. Then from your closet window measure to where you need to be. Good Luck.

Re: awning

Remember that the siding probably has 1" plus or minus of foam board behind it. You almost may be better to remove a strip of siding install a piece of PT wood and continue from there.

Re: awning

Thanks, I was thinking about using a piece of PT wood as a header, the awning, is 15 ft long and I have 4 clamps to put up! Should I leave a section of siding out, replace with the wood? Still have to find the studs, was thinking about drilling some smaller holes in the insulation!

Re: awning

Absolutely use a good header. If it ends up being a 2 x4 that is already 1 1/2 inches thick and the header will be consuming the majority of the 2" lags.

Make sure you seal everything so water does not get behind the siding..... I would just attach PT wood to the house and you will be able to find studs easy if you remove a piece of siding.

Re: awning

And never, ever disassemble the awning mechanism..... (somebody is laughing at me) .
Nothing like a 6 foot arm propelling you horizontally off a ladder and throwing you 3 feet off the deck....
and then, flying along behind me:
All these exploded pieces of cast aluminum awning parts.....
