Axle mounting question...

I am replacing leaf springs on a boat trailer. The original springs had about 6 1/2" of arch, and the axle was mounted on top of the leafs. The only springs I can find in the same length and configuration have only 3 1/2" of arch. Would it be acceptable to mount the axle under the new leafs? I see that axles can be mounted either way, but since this is a change from original, I want to make sure I'm not missing some important point. Thanks in advance.

I don't see that it would be a problem as long as the spring perch is mounted to the axle to be sprung that way. If it is a cambered axle you cannot just turn it upside down. A straight axle probably can be turned upside down. Check those two things.

Moving the axle to the bottom of the springs should more than make up for that 3 inches and I'd guess it will actually leave you more clearance/raise the height of your trailer. As Bonz said, make sure the axle is straight or cambered to mount underneath. Unless you can weld it's pretty spendy around here to switch the perches to the other side.

Thanks for the replies. The axle is 2X3 box, drop axle. I will have to weld closed the holes on the bottom of the axle, and drill new locator holes on top. I would guess if it changes the ride height at all it would be no more than 1/2 to 1 inch.

What about finding a spring shop in your area to either make/source the correct height springs for you?

Arch in the springs is not the major factor. It is the eye-to-eye distance that is important. If you begin with the right dimension and have springs re-arched you change that dimension and the result is a shackle that can easily goe over-center and lock.
