Re: backfire mercruiser

Talking to a wall? I was just responding to ariverrat's post. I have been following trents advice I ordered a gasket kit for carb, received it today, also bought a new dist cap. It is pouring out today so I can't work on it hopefully later or tomorrow I can get to it.
Trent any idea how I can get service bulletin for gasket problem?
Thanks Riverrat! I have been told(in the past few days) that the low compression on 2 adjacent cylinders is a sign of a blown head gasket. but have not heard of it causing the lawnmower effect lol. How can that be checked without tearing apart the engine? how involved is replacing the head gasket? does engine have to come out of boat?

Thanks again you guys are the best!!!
but thats coming from a wall so....

Didnt mean to offend . You could easily have a bent push rod. have you taken the valve cover off? Checked for loose rockerarms? Done a fuel sample to see if its water in the fuel?....?????Wasnt refering to you directly when I said talking to a wall. There are a few people on this forum that know their asz from a hole in the ground.. There are alot that DONT. Just because someone owns a boat doesnt mean they know how to work on them. Ive worked on boats for 20+ years been certified for 15 years, probably could diagnois your problem in fifteen minutes If I had your boat. Goodluck

Re: backfire mercruiser

I wasn't offended rod I empathize with you I Just was pointing out that sometime the walls have ears.(lol jokeing I also know that I am by no means a mechanic more or less a certified marine mechanic! and I do appreciate all of your and all others time in helping us poor slobs out. I am a boat owner, just not a rich one so if I can fix myself i want to. Not only that but if i do have to take it to one of you guys I want to know what the problem is before I take it, not all in your profession are honest. I really do take all of the advice I get and appreciate it MORE than I could ever tell you.

OK I cleaned the carb and reinstalled still backfiring. Any thoughts on the headgasket? How can I check without tearing apart the engine? Is that a big job should I ahve it done? will I need to pull valve cover and exhaust manifold? thanks again

OK did the simple thing first. Good, next id pull the valve cover and make sure you dont have a bent push rod. Re run compression test first. Any signs of water in the cylinders? (=higher compression)

Ill help all I can but it sounds like you need to take it to a shop. If you dont know what a bent push rod looks like ( and im truly not being sarcastic) you could waste your whole summer jacking with this. Bring it to TEXAS and ill fix it for you.
