bad acceleration

1990 johnson 175 I have an intermittent problem with acceleration, motor cuts out when trying to get boat on plane. I also have problem blipping throttle to get boat up on trailer. All is fine running on a hose, blip throttle, power is good. Blip throttle in water, motor dies.

This will probably end up as a carb rebuild issue, but start with a spark/compression/fuel sample test before you get in too deep.

if carbs haven't been soaked,cleaned and rebuilt since new, i'd say carbs.
