Bad Coils ?

I have a 86 225 vro, have weak spark on all 6 cyl's, (real hard starting)Checked stator and ign. boxes, both appear good, got a new coil and tried it on each cyl,have good spark on all 6 with a new coil. What are the odds of having 6 bad coils ? Can something else cause the coils to go bad ?

Do you know you have weak spark or is it just hard to start?<br /><br />What spark plugs are you using?

checked spark and it can't jump a 7/16 gap, only about 1/4, but with new coil it will jump 7/16, using champion QL77JC4

Clean the grounds real well on the other 5. Lets look at that first. Then look at all your connections. It doesnt take much to be a problem, especially the grounds.

murf1, I have a pair of 90 evinrudes, 200 Hp and the right one was hard to start. I had to use both batteries to get it to start and eventually even that wouldn't work. Spark would only jump 1/4 to 5/16 gap. Finally found the problem to be a bad ground cable from that motor. Changed it out yesterday and it is starting better than ever.<br /><br />I don't know if that might be part of your problem but it is easy to eliminate. Run a jumper cable from the battery ground to a good ground on your motor and try it...
