Have a 1967 Merc 1100SS (breakerless ignition). Motor only runs while holding key in start position. I've read where that usually means the trigger is bad. Does anyone know a simple way to test this with a standard volt/ohm meter to determine for sure if the trigger is at fault?

Thanks gents!
George

gb3, Why doesn't this indicate a bad ignition switch?Cranking and running positions have to supply voltage to the ignition.
DHP

Re: Bad Distributor Trigger?

Hi DHP,

I believe the key switch is working fine. I can turn the key to the "on" position and can read 12v at the switchbox white terminal. I've tested the switchbox and that seems to be fine.

I had read this info pointing to the trigger a couple of times, but here's one site that I was able to remember: Mercury troubleshooting
Note step #3. The info calls for a special tool, CDI #511-9710 Trigger Tester, which I don't have access to. That's why I was hoping someone might know a simple way around it.

Thanks!
George

Re: Bad Distributor Trigger?

Changed out our trigger with a questioable spare with same results (motor would die when key is released from the start position). Does this sound like a bad trigger or could it be something else?

Would truly appreciate the advice!
George
