I just arrived back in Mexico City after driving from Ottawa Canada on my annual return from the summer at the lake.

The weather was dry and clear for the first day and I made good time making it 100 miles north of Memphis.

I crossed in to Texas and stopped for gas (and Starbucks) on the east side of Dallas around noon. I don't look for cheap gas, just stop at any station that is convenient, but I noticed that this particular station was really busy and the gas was the lowest ($1.789/gal) of the entire trip.

I drove south towards Austin and 20 miles south of Temple Tx my van just quit!

Managed to limp to a gas station and it was obvious that I had a problem with the fuel system. The guys there were really helpful and even though they did not have a mechanic on site called a local tow truck to take me back to Temple ($70.00) to the nearest dealer.

Arrived as the dealership was just closing however they promised to repair first thing next day so I found a hotel and settled in for the night.

The next morning I checked with the dealer an hour after they opened and they had not even looked at my van, in fact they could not find the keys or work-order. Walked to Starbucks for my morning shot while they checked to see what the problem was. Turned out to be a trashed fuel pump which they said was caused by bad gas! Quoted me $350 for a new pump and said it would require 3 hours to install. Less than an hour later the van was ready and I was hit with a $750 bill. I said to the guy, how can you charge me for 3 1/2 hours labour when you have only had the van in the shop for less than 2 hours. He gave me some story that the mechanic had worked on it first thing and it took 2 guys to do the job. I feel that they really hosed me on the labour  Classic case of taking advantage of a traveller in distress!
The rest of the journey was uneventful except for the aggressive, rude truck drivers! What is it with these guys  I had one who indicated to pull out as I was half way down his trailer and then proceeded to tail gate, honked his horn and gave me the finger as if I should have braked and got out of his way. I don't know how many times a truck would pull out to overtake another truck doing 1 mph faster and when he gets halfway past the truck being overtaken then starts to pull away. If a car driver did this they would be right up their tail with lights & horn blaring.
Just an observation! The Mexican truckers are very considerate and courteous compared to the US guys.

I hear ya on the labor charges.
My experiences have shown me that there is a book that says it should take XX hours to change this part and XX hours to change that part.
If the labor goes over, they will tack on the extra time (usually). However, if it takes less time, they will not (again usually) take it off of the bill.

Again, that is in my experience in several places in several states.

AK Chappy

I used to work in the auto industry. They DO use a book for labor hours for a particular repair. Where I worked, if it went over, the tech ate it. But very RARELY did it go over. The techs have found a way to make sure they do the repair in record time....It's money in their pocket. Can't blame em, they're making a living too!

Having said that, very rarely do I let someone work on my vehicles because of this!

Not all in TX are like that...Most welcome you with open arms!

TX...the Friendly State!

Yea I was going to say that if your pump went bad because of bad gas and they did not empty your tank of this bad gas, then you are in for another pump job.

A few weeks ago, I called the 800 number on the back of a 18 wheel truck to report bad driving. The guy was cutting people off, tailgating, blowing the horn, and changing lanes very rapidly.

Bad gas doesnt kill fuel pumps, they just die. If it was bad gas, did they dump the old gas from the tank?

Ken

Scumm are scum but in your case why are you going to Mexico? I can get over. I can make more out of what I have. I bet you vote in this country and vote Republican. If you are a Canandian and go down to Mexico, even worse. Someone is incompetent or probobly a rip off artist, why should you complain?
It is so easy to rip off people I would never do it but if it make more money for me, who cares?
Now as I have vented, I will say that if you are still avble to do some work keep a tool box, a few hydraulic jacks, a ground cloth, and the most important part(a manual). Read it before you go and where. Then read it again. If you have an issue then you will be prepared.

All for me and screw everyone else!

Lost Canadian

Scum bags are scum bags.
But you have the dealerships name. I would email the parent factory (Ford GM) as this is not good for them to have a dealer ripping customers off! Yup you got hosed!
Thats why they have Flat rate manuals or sheets.
Us/we the customer know exactly the price (even though its highly inflated) and don't pay more or less.
A great dealership will eat the cost if it goes over the flat rate and reward the mech if he/she comes under the time by giving the a % of the savings on their next paycheck.

On Truckers.. who in the heck knows! They are the Best and Worst of all of us. I have many friends (ham operators) who are truckers. They go out of their way to help people. Not all are hams BTW. They go out of the way to stop and help change a tire etc. But these are not the guys I meet on the highways! Most of the ones I run into, or try not to run into or get run over by them are JERKS!

Last year when crossing the border in Blaine (BC) I had one cut me off and I took King George Hwy (Surrey BC) when I really didn't want to take King George!

Just my .02

KB8PMX here.

BTW, I always take a tool box and manual with me on road trips. With the van I have. I usually have spare parts as well. I know it's sad. This POS is going to take a long drive off a short cliff some day. ;)

Canadian...
You said something about a "Dealer"?
If your auto was repaired by a car dealership, then you do have some recourse through the manufacturer... (Ford, GM.....whoever).

A tank of bad gas may have put your pump over the edge, but it was ready to expire anyway. They are a real B***h to do sometimes as most are inside the fuel tank. A job that you most likely would not want to do yourself while on the road.

Telmanmn; I think you need to go easy on the hard stuff late at night! What the heck are you talking about?

Well it sounds like I'm not alone on both issues!
I was not trying to say that the US truckers are all bad or any worse than the Canadians and the Mexicans are great on the interstates but they too grow horns as soon as they cross the city line.

The van is a Chrysler which has low miles and has been amazingly reliable. I do have a manual/tools and am quite capable of performing my own repairs, however removing the tank and replacing the pump is a little more than I care to do on the shoulder of I35. I had the vehicle in the shop for a full service including fuel filter just before I left.

I asked the service guy about the gas in the tank and he said they had put some conditioner in and it was now fine. Yeah Right!

Re: Bad experience in Texas

A sidenote to this thread.
Whenever I have a fuel injected car give me fuel pump problems, when the tank is off, there is a nice size hole cut, either in the bed, if it's a truck, the floor, in the case of the 8 Astros I have, or anywhere in a car that is in the same location as the fuel pump.

Lost Canadian, on the 98 Chrysler minivan you just have to lower the tank low enough to get at the pump. It is very cheap and easy to do, if you have jacks and jack stands. Can you tell that I have had to replace one before? ;)

Re: Bad experience in Texas

telmanmn, you having a bad day or what?

LC, when having your vehicle worked on by a stranger, good to always ask upfront about the billing - will it be time and material or flat rate? If flat rate, then you should know in advance how much it is going to cost (and ask to see the flatrate book where they get this figure from). If it gets done faster, be happy, you got out of there sooner and be on your way.

Re: Bad experience in Texas

I lost a fuel pump one time on RT81 near Lebanon PA at 10 pm. I pulled the pump off my 1979 Chevy P/U and the spring was broke so we just climbed in the back and waited for help or morning. At about 3 a.m. a trooper stopped to see why I was there and told me he would send help in the morning because a tow truck at 3 a.m. would be too expensive. No help came so I hitched a ride to the nearest station and told them my fuel pump was bad. The guy was alone in the shop and said he would order the pump and send out a tow truck as soon as his partner showed up. About an hour later a tow truck showed up and towed me to the shop, they then pushed out the car they were working on and worked on my truck. About a half hour later I Paid the bill of $75 plus a tip and thanked the shop and was on my way to Georgia. There are some good people left in the USA.

I owned a garage in Florida in the late 70's early 80's. We had to give the customer a Written estimate and stay within 10% of that estimate or the State Attorney's office would be down on us like stink on..ummm..white on rice.
