Bad Heatexchanger????

When we got back from our fishing trip yesterday I noticed some anti-freeze in the bilge.........thought it came from the overflow because it looked kinda full and we got tossed around a bit while we were anchored fishing.

This morning I went down to the boat because it was bothering me! I brought an anti-freeze tester and a container and was going to remove some from the overflow. When I drew some out I noticed that is was very diluted. I then removed the cap from the heatexchanger and drew some out.......looked like pure water!!!!

I then started the engine with the cap off and antifereeze/water immediatly began overflowing from the top of the heatexchanger.

I did notice that the new engine was running a little cooler this year as compared to the previous engine, but I attributed this to the new risers and impeller in the raw water pump.

Oil is clean and level has not changed.

Here is my thought........the heatexchanger is leaking between the 2 compartments. With the cap on raw water was not only passing through the raw water section and the block and manifolds and I didn't even notice it.

Can I test the heatexchanger with a radiator pressure tester? If I pressurize the system and listen on the raw water side I am betting I hear a leak. I really don't think I have a leak between the risers/manifolds......water came out too fast from the top of the heatexchanger.

Any other thoughts?

This is just unbelievable!!!

Re: Bad Heatexchanger???? Updated

Just got back from the boat. When I (tried) to presurize the feshwater side.....all I did was pump it out the exhaust........I saw bubbles coming out of the outdrive. If I loosened the return side of the raw water on the heatexchanger I saw bubbles at the heat exchanger/hose connection I loosened. System held no pressure at all........

Are these repairable when they leak this bad? Or should I just get a new one?
Any suggestions on where to purchase one?

The heatexchanger is one of the only things I haven't replaced yet!

Ayuh,.....

Pull the Exchanger,+ bring it to a Radiator Shop,....
They'll be able to tell you Exactly where it's leaking,+ if it can be resoldered.....
Or,...
You might be able to tell Yourself once it's On the bench.....

hey bondo.........

Think I might be able to see the problem with the end caps off?

Also.......now I probably have raw water in the block and manifolds........is this a concern after I fix/replace the exchanger? Guess I should flush it out......should I use anything?

Ayuh,....

I'd Drain it,+ Flush it at your earliest convenience Tony.....

How can I flush it w/o the engine running?
If I remove the h/e and the hose from the circ pump do you think that will drain it enough?

Or should I connect a garden hose to the input (raw water) hose and run it. My slip is on a river.........the water is defintely brackish...........not pure salt water.

Ayuh,.....

At this point,... I'd drain it like it was Raw water cooled,+ you're winterizing it,...
Ei;.. Block drains, Manifold drains, etc.....

Or should I connect a garden hose to the input (raw water) hose and run it.

Ayuh,......
The way it's leaking,....
I'd fill the freshwater side(from the hose),+ run as quoted....

After it's Fixed,....
Drain it again,+ Fill as Normal....
