Bad idle - Carb Kits?

My 1998 Johnson 200 Ocean Runner is having problems at idle, and at acceleration (bogs down and dies). The boat sat for about two years.

I re-built the carbs, but I couldn't find a kit to rebuild with, so I used the same gaskets. Same goes for the fuel pump.

I realize that I may need to re-build the carbs and replace the gaskets, but I can't find the kit. Can anybody help me with a p/n number for the fuel pump and carbs?

The last question I had was with carb adjustments. I really only see one adjustment for the low speed air in-take. From what I have read on this forum, I should tighten them, then back them up 2 1/2 to 3 rotations. Is this model specific, or is this just a general reference?

As a note, the engine appears to run fine with a hose hooked up to it, but when I put it under a load in the water is when I have the above problems. After re-building the carbs I took it out and had the above problems. Once I got the boat on a plane, the engine ran perfectly fine for about 3 minutes, then just died. I was able to restart the engine after about 5-10 minutes and had the same problems again. Is it the same problem, or do I have to problems? Should I look at my thermostat?

The plugs all look good, but I did replace and re gap them to the manuals recommendation.

Using the same gaskets actually may be fine if you have no leaks anywhere, hard to say if the same is true internally though. You may have a fuel pump issue. If it sat like you say, it is time for a waterpump kit also if you didnt do it then. Have someone pump the bumb while trying to get underway, also can you pump the bumb hard from the beginning.

Dumb question, but did you get fresh fuel when you did the carbs?

I did drain the gas and put some new gas in it, and have had somebody pump the fuel bulb while trying to accelerate. The bulb isn't totally hard when the motor is running, but it doesn't seem to help when I pump it.

I will look for the water pump. That does sound like a good idea. Another thing on the to do list is decarb the engine. I have had a lot of problems finding anything for the 1998 engine.

I have a simmilar motor(1996) I was told that the proper number of turns out on the idle screw is 5-6. Also watch those rubber gaskits on the side of the carb and manifold. They are a source for air leaks.(ones with 4 screws). I am also looking into a weak spark issue on mine. dave

I was actually thinking about that. It looks like the gasket is warping on one side. I may have over tightened it.

I think I read to use WD-40 to help look for air leaks. Can anybody verify that it will not damage anything?

Thanks for everybodies help so far.
