I have a 2003 four stroke 9.9 and it is having a rough time idleing. Carb has been apart and cleaned. It is good. Theses carbs have a electrical type of enrichment system on them. I dont have the manual for it so I was wondering how to test this to see if its good. If I unhook the wires it will idle just fine. Once you hook the wires up it wants to kill on me. The two wires run up to the flywheel and are a coil of wires to run the enrichner. When I check both the wires to ground I have continuity and I don't think I should. Running I have 24 volts at a higher rpm. I hope someone knows about this system and can help me out a little. thanks

Re: bad idle

Hi,

I have the same enrichment control on my 2005 9.9 yamha. The way to check it is to take it off the carb and put 12v to it and it should get hot and the neddle should move out after a few min. When it moves out it cuts off the enricment. I thought mine was bad as I could not start when cold unless I manually choked it with my finger over the air intake. I bought a new one ($70.00) and installed it and the engine did the same thing. I rechecked the old control and the second time I checked it it seem to be OK, so looks like I spent $70.00) for a spare. I think my problem is/was the fuel pump itself. I have replaced it and hope it fixs the problem. I have not been able to really check this fix yet but hope to do so this week-end. Hope this helps. This enrichment valve is called the "STARTER SET" in the manual.
