Re: Bad smell

Atom unfortunately you probably have a problem called permeation. Most marine septic systems are connected via specially formulated rubber hoses. Some have PVC pipes which connect the system but that's not done much anymore. In either case what happens is that the piping holds enough waste for a long enough time that the smell will seep into the porosity of the piping. Most people assume plastic piping, rubber or PVC, is impervious to odor. That is not true. Over time the piping will permeate or 'soak up' the smell. The smell is then carried by the ac system spreading it through the boat.

To check for this problem first make sure you have no leaks or openings in the system. Check all piping, connections and tanks. Even a small hard to detect leak can cause havoc over a period of time. Next completely flush and pump out the system as completely as possible. Take your time here. A couple of flushes through the head is not enough. It may be necessary to use a tank flusher to clean the tank depending on how well it empties out. A flusher is nothing more than a wand that you connect a water hose to with a nozzle that sprays in all directions. You insert the flusher into the tank access hatch and spray the inside of the holding tank. Try to stir as much matter off the bottom as possible so that it may be pumped out. Hoses and piping are the most likely to permeate odor so pay special attention to flushing them out.

It is possible the odor will go away for a time after the system has been cleaned. If it comes back you likely have permeated hoses and they will need to be replaced.

If after you are satisfied the system is clean and you still detect odor it may be necessary to begin replacing components until the odor goes away. Most likely it will only take replacing the hoses to fix the problem.
