Baffled yamaha 91 20hp

If anyone can help me diagnose a problem I would be very grateful. 2 days ago as I pushed the throttle down, the boat started to plane and reach top speed. Then a loud alarm came from the control box, and the engine died. The alarm stayed on until the ignition key was switched off. I tried again and same thing happened. On the third time, when I put the motor in fwd gear, no respone came from the throttle, though the boat did go into gear and I was able to creep home. Someone told me that the impeller could be broken (and subsequently my father in law bought a new one). But there is a firm and cold water jet coming from the ejection valve. When now started, the motor revs extremely high in neutral. And 'clunks' very heavinly into fwd, with now throttle response. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Problem was a broken Linkage. Took many hours to find. Thankyou all for looking
